LETTERS From CAMP Rehoboth |
The Way I See It |
by Steve Elkins, Editor |
As Executive Director of CAMP Rehoboth, I am fortunate to be able to work with an amazing group of people-both staff and volunteers. I was especially struck by that fact at our recent Board of Directors Retreat. The Board of CAMP Rehoboth is an exceptional group of volunteers committed to making CAMP Rehoboth a strong and vibrant organization. They are committed, as well, to seeing the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center Project come to full fruition. With the purchase of 39 Baltimore Avenue, our move to bigger offices, and all the activities of the summer season, CAMP Rehoboth is a very exciting and busy place these days-in no small part because of the efforts of the Board of Directors. To all of them I say thank you for your unwavering support and commitment to our organization.
While I'm on the business of CAMP Rehoboth, I would like to take a moment to welcome Andrea Andrus as our new Founder's Circle Director. All of us in the office have been struggling to keep up with the new work generated by the Founder's Circle, so we are delighted to have her step in to manage the funding of the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center Project. Andrea has been an active leader in the Project since its inception a few years ago, and I know that the Founder's Circle will be in good hands. Anyone interested in pledging to the Community Center Project can contact Andrea through the CAMP office. Speaking of the community center project, i want to point out the ad on page 6. CAMP Rehoboth is putting out a general call to architects who might have an interest in working with us on developing plans for the Community Center. At this point we are simply asking for a letter of interest; guidelines for proposals will follow at a later date. Interested parties should respond by August 31. As July comes to a close, it's time to for us to slip into full Sundance mode. Last week the Host and Sponsor letters were mailed. To be included in the printed material for Sundance we need you to respond by early August. A Host and Sponsor form appears on page 37 of this issue or you can sign up or purchase tickets on the Sundance Website at www.sundancebenefit.com. Sundance, for those of you new to the area, is our huge two-night Labor Day Weekend event. The first night is the Sundance Live and Silent Auction and Cocktail Party, and the second night is the dance. For more information about Sundance 2002 see page 6. In Rehoboth Beach it is almost election time once again. On August 10, voters will head to the polls to vote for two out of the three candidates running for City Commissioner. In the City Commissioner race, incumbent Betty Ann Kane is up for re-election and faces challengers Mark Aguirre and Joe Hill. Mayor Sam Cooper is running unopposed for what will be his fifth term in office. On page 14, the three City Commissioner candidates answer a few questions for the readers of Letters from CAMP Rehoboth. All votes count, of course, but it seems especially apparent in a small town like Rehoboth, where the outcome of an election can be determined by a handful of voters. If you are registered to vote in Rehoboth don't miss this election. The polls will be open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. This year my partner Murray's art show was about circles-and so is the Sundance theme-and I must admit it seems fitting. Year after year, summer after summer, we keep coming back to the same place. This will be the fifteenth Sundance, CAMP Rehoboth is in its twelfth season, Murray and I will be celebrating our twenty-fourth anniversary. Circles within circles-it's interesting to both of us how we keep rediscovering ourselves. Stay cool, the best of the summer is yet to come! |
