Speak Out |
Although the easily excitable right-wing extremists among us are now foaming about gay marriage, we gay people have even more basic needs. Our Declaration of Independence states our rights include "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." That order is deliberate: before happiness we must first have life and liberty.
As for "life," Congress refuses to pass a hate crimes law covering sexual orientation, meaning there is no consensus that gay lives are really all that valuable and worthy of the protections we give to religion and race. As to "liberty," Congress cannot bring itself to pass the Employees' Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) granting gay people the freedom of working for a living without discrimination. In Delaware gay people can still be legally refused food, clothing and shelter because HB99 has been fought by a strident minority. What liberty is that? Ah, "the pursuit of happiness!" Civil marriage is all that and much more, according nearly 2000 federal and state rights, responsibilities and protections. But not even the most unenlightened should feel threatened by America treating all of us the same. "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?" Sounds like a great gay agenda! Doug & Corey Marshall-Steele Thanks for making the first annual Celebrity Chefs' Beach Brunch a tremendous success! We raised $74,000. These great results were due to the committee's active role throughout the year, and especially, the week leading up to the brunch. Thanks for helping Meals On Wheels of Delaware generate these new funds for the seniors benefit. Special thanks to our committee chairs whose efforts made the event a successful day. To the great team from Sussex County, you can throw a great party. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to join you.
