With Memorial day behind us, summer 2012 is off and running! Though we’re only a week into the summer season, the theme parties have started already—I was just handed a pair of yellow sunglasses and a yellow sippy cup for the White Party (with a twist of lemon), and on June 3, it’s all about the Black and White Beach Ball. I can only guess at what the rest of the summer will bring.
One of the most enjoyable parts of the summer season is the chance to sit down and relax with friends, and the CAMP Courtyard is the perfect spot to do just that. Though we rebuilt it in 2009, the CAMP Courtyard has provided a welcoming space in downtown Rehoboth for more than 20 years. Just connect to the CAMP Wi-Fi, and sit back and enjoy. Our thanks to the amazing team of volunteers we call “the rainbow thumbs” for taking such good care of the courtyard and CAMP Rehoboth grounds, and to Jimmy Windsor of Windsor’s Flowers for all the summer plantings.
On June 20, from 5-7 p.m.PNC Wealth Management will host a cocktail reception and conversation at CAMP Rehoboth on the importance of planning for same-sex couples. The event, called Pâté and Planning…A Delectable Combination, continues CAMP Rehoboth’s commitment to providing information about Civil Unions. The event is free, features food by Nage, and is presented by Jacquelyn Brennan-Boyer and Leanna Johannes, Vice Presidents and Senior Wealth Planners for PNC Wealth Management. Come and join us, it should be a fun and informative event.
As part of the work I do as a member of the Delaware Human Relations Commission, I’ve become a licensed voter registrar for state and federal elections. Anyone not registered to vote can stop by and see me at CAMP Rehoboth. Whether you’re a Democrat or a Republican, or somewhere in between, it’s important to vote. I’ll be happy to make sure you’re registered for the 2012 elections.
CAMP Rehoboth has been at the forefront of AIDS education/prevention in Delaware for many years, and our CAMPsafe program continues to provide free counseling and testing and thousands of condoms to our community every year. CAMP Rehoboth Health Services Director Sal Seeley is joined this summer by doctoral student intern Jessica Fritzges, and volunteer nurse Janet Idema. From health screenings and flu shots provided in partnership with Beebe Medical Center, to grief and support groups, CAMP Rehoboth takes an active role in the health and wellbeing of our community.
Looking ahead, the summer heats up on June 16, from 5-7 p.m., when the CAMP Bachelor Auction returns to Aqua for another round of “hot fun in the summertime.” Emcees Josh Levie and Chris Beagle promise us handsome men, great prizes, and perhaps a few surprises, as well. There will be a sneak peek, meet the bachelors preview party at Bachelor Auction sponsor Universal Gear on Friday, June 15 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Also on the horizon, Bruce Pfeufer and Mini Bear Graphics present Typhoon Judy starring the one and only Christopher Peterson as Judy Garland. The show, created by Darrin Hagen and Christopher Peterson, will benefit CAMP Rehoboth. Typhoon Judy: Saturday, July 28, doors open at 8 p.m., showtime 9 p.m., Rehoboth Beach Convention Center. Tickets are $100 for front row table seating, $75, $50, and $30, and are available online at camprehoboth.com, by calling 302-227-5620, and at Proud Bookstore.
As reported earlier, there will be no Love event this summer. between soaring costs and the July 4th holiday falling mid-week, we decided to put all our efforts into the 25th Anniversary Sundance on Labor Day weekend. These big events take enormous support from the community, so please make plans now to be here for Sundance 2012: The Legend of the Silver Rainbow.
