I cant believe its Memorial Day Weekend already. I know I say that every year at this time...but I cant believe its Memorial Day Weekend! The saying goes, "time flies when youre having fun," so I must be having a ball. Speaking of having a ball, thats what life at the beach is supposed to be about, right? So welcome one and all to the official start of the 1997 summer season. CAMP Rehoboth wishes you a safe, happy, healthy, joyous, and for you business owners, profitable, season.
Murray says that this summer is all about revival and renewal. Hes painting butterflies, and SUNDANCE 97 will be called RAINBOW REVIVAL. His favorite word-of-the-month is jubilation. Lets hope it carries through the entire season. After all, CAMP is about creating a positive environment, so bring on the jubilation.
Which leads me back to having a ball. This year, "sisters are doing it for themselves," at the Rehoboth Convention Center. On Saturday night, May 24, Jam Foks presents a spectacular womens event called SPLASH 97 to benefit Sussex County AIDS Committee and the Mautner Project. It is, of course, only the first in a line of big fundraising extravaganzas that grace the summer social calendar. You know them by heart because most have been around long enough to call tradition, and because I talk about them over and over and over in this column, and will continue to do so. The fourth of July weekend brings us, of course, LOVE 97, followed in August by The Renegades PRIDE 97, and the grand final Labor Day Weekend, (and in its tenth season,) SUNDANCE 97. Yes, folks, bring on the jubilation!
And that, Im sure, only scratches the surface. The boys and girls of summer arrive this weekend bringing with them an endless round of house parties, beach parties, dinner parties and festivities for all. Thinking about it, I must confess, makes me feel a little nostalgic for my own beach house crew of many years ago. It also reminds me of all the friendships that got started in and grew out of this little place called Rehoboth. Murrays parents were here a few weeks ago and his father, after spending an afternoon walking around town, commented that there was something different about the people in Rehoboth. "They seem happy," he said, "theyre open." That reminded me that wherever I go in this little town there are people smiling and waving. It reminded me how lucky I am to be a part of this community.
Speaking of the community, both local residents, part time residents, and visitors, Id like to thank everyone for their continued support of CAMP Rehoboth, LETTERS from CAMP Rehoboth, and all the projects in which we are involved. We hope that we are serving your needs. LETTERS still relies heavily on volunteer writers, photographers, and artists. We like to know what youre thinking and doing, so keep in touch. We hope that one of these years well be able to grow into physical space more able to function as a community center. In the meantime theres always the "rainbow alley" courtyard outside of CAMP. Dont be a stranger, and dont forget to look for us at www.camprehoboth.com.
Most of all, dont forget that its a brand new summer. Have a great Memorial Day Weekend, and a great season. Now bring on the jubilation!
