Just a little way past Rehoboth, in Dewey at Collins Street on the Bay, youll find Vince Dortenzo and his Ocean Winds Watersports. Vince has 11 jet skis for rentalfive 3-seaters and 6 two-seaters.
Offering friendly instruction, comfortable life vests (required by law!) and jet skis that you can easily get on and off without getting drenched or making a complete fool of yourself, this is the place to go for fun.
Vince, who hails from O.C. where he lives with his wife and infant son, works construction on the off season, but has been on the Bay with his watersports business for over a decade now.
Ably assisted by Chad Yoder, Vince oversees a thriving business. But no matter how busy they are, Vince and Chad always have time to provide customers with thorough instruction and all the help they need to feel comfortable on the jet skis.
Vince wants Letters readers to know that while hes open 7 days a week ("any day with a Y," is how he puts it), but Wednesdays and Thursdays are his busiest, with the weekends a little slower due to rental change-overs. So weekends, and Monday and Tuesday mornings are great times to ride.
Vince tells Letters that the 3-person jet skis (which are fine for a single rider) give a more stable ride than the smaller 2-person craft. Whichever jet ski you choose, theres a wide expanse of Rehoboth Bay you can travel. While theres no set course, there are clear boundariesand Chad is always out and about to assistand mornings are the best time, because there is less wind.
In order to rent a jet ski you must be 19 years old (16 if you have a Delaware boaters license), but parents are welcome to rent the skis and take their youngsters aboard.
Naturally, its a weather-dependent business, but overcast days are just as great for a ride as sunny onesso far this season, Vince has been looking for that elusive sun along with the rest of usbut when it does finally make a permanent appearance, he figures its going to be a great summer. Already, in between the rain and cold, lots of Letters readers have been by to take a spin on the Bay. Groups of 3, 4 or more have a blast.
So whether youre 19 or 90 (well, maybe not 90, but Vince says lots of seniors have taken turns and loved it!) check out Ocean Winds on Collins Street (at the marina right behind the miniature golf course).
In fact, CAMP Rehoboth reporter Fay Jacobs was seen recently trying out a 3-person jet ski. While her dare-devil partner Bonnie zoomed into the distance on the 2-person bike, Fay had a grand time putt-putting aroundfeeling very safe and secure on the larger jet ski remarking that it was a whole lot more funand much easier to ridethan the arcade version on the boardwalk!
Max says, "It's a dog's life when you're cruising Rehoboth Bay on a jet ski from Ocean Winds Watersports."
