Michael died March 10, 1997, due to complications from AIDS. In addition to being the President of the Board of Directors for the Delaware HIV consortium, he was a board member of CAMP Rehoboth, and of Building Futures: Family AIDS Housing, as well as the president of the Baltimore Medical System.
At the time of his death, Michael was co-owner of several restaurants in the Rehoboth and Washington, DC areas. He started his career in the restaurant business in 1994 with the openings of Rehoboths Celsius and Cloud 9 restaurants. In June 1996, he and his associates opened Mercury Grill in Washington, DC.
The restaurant business was Michaels second career. A graduate of Old Dominion University, he received his masters degree in health care administration from George Washington University. He served as assistant vice president at Cooper Hospital-University Medical Center in Camden, NJ; executive director of Philadelphias Metropolitan Health care Systems; and chief operating officer at Bon Secours Hospital in Baltimore, MD.
"Michael was so concerned about those PWAs caught in the financial gap," said Consortium board member Steve Elkins. "Theyre the ones who do not qualify for financial assistance under the Ryan White Act, but are still facing the exorbitant expenses of living with AIDS. "
Michael was passionate in his belief that no one should be faced with deciding whether to pay for the medicine necessary to stay alive, or the ordinary expenses of daily living.
"This fund will be used to empower PWAs to advocate for changes in the state law which would help alleviate such situations."
"Michaels warmth, compassion and loyalty to his friends were remarkable," said his friend, Melissa Wendland of Allentown, PA. "He would be pleased with the fund."
