Sondheims Broadway, a collection of songs from the early career of Broadway lyricist/composer Stephen Sondheim, is arguably the most inventive wordsmith in Broadway history. Some of his most popular show tunes, including songs from Gypsy, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and Company are included in this musical revue.
Director Fay Jacobs has produced and directed professional theatre in the Washington, DC area for over 20 years. "This is the perfect show for the beach," she says. "The songs are witty and clever, and when they are taken out of context, in a relaxed cabaret-style setting, you can have a lot of fun with them." As the shows opening number says, "Nothing thats formal, nothing thats normal, tragedy tomorrow, comedy tonight!"
Responding to local residents comments about the need for more live musical comedy and cabaret entertainment in the Rehoboth-Lewes area, Fay is importing three performers with an impressive variety of experience from the DC, Baltimore and Annapolis area to bring Sondheims Broadway to life.
Margaret Allman, Eric Peterson and Eloise Ullman, who will be commuting to the beach for the three performances, are looking forward to the booking despite the traveling. "Were glad to do it," says Peterson, who hails from Washington, DC. "This show is a delight to perform; it feels more like a big party than a night at work."
Margaret Allman, who is choreographing the revue in addition to performing, has starred in productions of Sondheims Into the Woods and Side by Side and had lead roles in Singin in the Rain, Oliver, A Chorus Line and South Pacific.
Eric Peterson has performed in musicals like Oklahoma! and Brigadoon and has had leading and character roles in non-musical plays ranging from Lend Me a Tenor to King Lear. Peterson recently won raves from critics for his portrayal of Dr. Peter Patrone in the Heidi Chronicles.
Eloise Ullman has been seen center stage as Marian the Librarian in The Music Man, and Maria Von Trapp in The Sound of Music, as well as in Sondheims Company, and classics Guys and Dolls and Hello, Dolly. She recently appeared in the lead role in Steel Magnolias.
Fay Jacobs has directed over 40 musicals, comedies and dramas in the DC area since the early 1970s and is pleased to be bringing her latest effort to the beach, where she spends weekends, year-round. "Rehoboth and Lewes have quite a bit of live musicbut so many people have suggested that the area needs stand-up comedy and musical revues like other popular resort areas. I hope we can be instrumental in starting a tradition here!" Jacobs says.
