LETTERS From CAMP Rehoboth |
Calling All Artists |
by Sondra N. Arkin |
We have been searching for years for the right occasion to roll out a large scale art project at CAMP Rehoboth. Now that our space is bigger, it's actually the time to think smaller. In some ways the economy has conspired in a positive way to give us the kick in the butt we've needed.
How so? Every year we ask artists to donate highly valued works for us to auction. And while our generous bidders get spectacular art, they still have to reach deep into their pockets. This year we are asking everyone for a lot less, but we're hoping to gain a lot more. We're creating something both bigger and smaller at the same time. On Friday, July 3rd, CAMP Rehoboth will host the first LottoHEART Game Show as part of the Whole Lotta Love Weekend (the annual LOVE dance is Saturday night). The centerpiece of the night is a combination auction and art lottery. In addition to a core group of live auction works that continue our HEART of the Community project for the 8th year, we are inviting YOU to participate by creating work for the LottoHEART project. What is LottoHEART? Established and emerging artists will be exhibited alongside hobbyists and students. All works are the same size: 5 x 7". All works are donations and will be sold for $100the catch is that your identity will not be known by the buyer until after the purchase. Room for all? You bet. Your mom's an artist? Great. Your niece? Have her sign up. Your colleagues? Friends? That's the heart of it. And the Lotto part? Not only doesn't the buyer know who created the work they covet (for sure that is... they might guess), but the order in which they get to select their art is random (they could be first, they could be tenth, they could be last). The LottoHEART Game Show will be hosted by the fabulous Christopher Peterson. Need we say more? Plusto make this available to CAMP Rehoboth supporters who might not come to the event, we are actually asking artists for TWO small pieces (come on, if you're going to make one, it is just as easy to do twoor four, or six!). In addition to the one in the exhibition, a second work will be literally wrapped and random in our aptly named Blind Date group so that all generous CAMP Rehoboth supporters can play along. Everyone is a winner. A sneak peek preview party honoring the artists will be held at CAMP Rehoboth at 37 Baltimore Avenue in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware on Saturday, June 27th from 4-6 p.m. Deadline for registration is fast approaching. Ask for a registration form at CAMP Rehoboth or go to www.artmarketdc.com/lottoHEART to sign up online and download the project PDF with complete instructions and delivery forms. Sign up today and start creating. Art is due June 15, 2009. Project is limited to the first 200 applicants. Sondra Arkin is a Washington DC Artist and chair of the CAMP Artist's group. |
