LETTERS From CAMP Rehoboth |
SPEAK Out |
On February 15, the Delaware Diamonds (DD's) 50 Women's Softball Team held an extremely successful fundraiser at the Seafood Shack. The team is comprised of women from the Rehoboth community and from areas as far away as Dover, Seaford, Laurel and Salisbury. The DD's won their state age group tournament last September which qualified the team to represent the state of Delaware at the Senior National Games in San Francisco this August.
The event raised almost $5000 toward the cost of sending our team of 20 to the Senior Olympic Games! The "Games" are open to men and women in a variety of sports and athletes partIcipate according to their age group level. The DD's will compete against other women's teams from around the country in the 50-55 age group. A very big thank you to our gracious hosts Steph and Shelia at the Seafood Shack, to Cathy Gorman for her wonderful entertainment, to the many local businesses who donated items and to everyone in the RB community who attended our event or purchased raffle tickets, 50/50 tickets and Silent Auction items. We couldn't have done it without you! Look for another event sometime in June and for members of the DD's at the Women's Conference in April. The team plays or practices every Monday night from 6-8 p.m. at the Sports at the Beach complex on Route 9 in Georgetown, beginning April 20. The DD's would love to have you come out and cheer us on, so bring those pom poms. For more information about the team, you can contact me at kitryan55@msn.com or 302-227-4460. Thanks to the entire community as we work hard to bring home the Gold! Kit Ryan Coach of the Delaware Diamonds I sincerely hope this letter to the editor doesn't sound like begging...but if it does so be it. I am a resident of Lewes and have been so for 15 years. Next month will be the 15th "anniversary" of my HIV+ diagnosis. I have volunteered for SCAC. and CAMP Rehoboth since I got that wonderful news! The reason I do is because of how much their efforts help those of us who are infected with this now "chronic" disease not the treacherous "terminal one" that it used to be. It amazed me how quickly many thought the epidemic was over and that they no longer needed to donate to these two organizations who have helped so many. And just in case there are those of you who are reading this saying, "Yeah, what are you doing about it besides benefiting from what I give (or used to give)." Well, let me surprise you a little. My partner, the love of my life, Henry Eagle, passed on in 2001 because the Lord needed a tailor. I thought CAMP had a great idea offering to inscribe a loved ones name on a memorial for $2500 dollars which would go to the building project. I immediately signed up, paying for it $50 a month out of my SSDI check. To me, it's definitely worth every penny. It may sound like begging to some of you, but I figure if I can kick in $50 a month you can re-do your budget and really help two great organizations. Please do what you can to help support these great organizations. Fred M. Hertrich I have this crazy idea. I've spoken to some folks who love to sing and don't have an outlet to do that. How about a CAMP chorus? Show tunes? Holiday tunes? Whatever you like! I'm happy to put some folks together to get this off the ground...but we need a choral director and accompanist...anybody interested? Chorus members can pay a small fee to participate and we will be able to buy music with the money and give a stipend to the director and pianist...any takers? E-mail me at fayjacobsrb@aol.com and we can make this happen. What's a gay community center without a gay chorus? Fay JacobsLetters should be addressed to Editor@camprehoboth.com or mailed to Editor, 37 Baltimore Ave., Rehoboth Beach, DE19971. Anonymous letters will not be printed. Letters may be edited for clarity and length. |
