Just when all of Rehoboth thought it was about to witness a lull in the summer-time party roster, a cornucopia of birthday, barbecue and brunch celebrations hit the scene in a frenzy. Those who were socially ambitious enough to try to attend them all soon discovered that even the most skilled party-hopper cant always keep up. Perhaps cloning isnt such a bad idea after all?
For those of you who couldnt meet the demand of attending every event, lets start by highlighting 114 Strawberrys day long pool party two weeks ago in honor of Ken Stears, Paul Rappaport, Michael Patterson, Michael Cover, Jeff Staadt and Kristen Bonneaus Birthday. A nice way to finish out the month of July, indeed. Bostons Bob Wolcott had everyone bouncing to the beat of this summers latest hits under a beautiful summer sky. A fan dance here, a fan dance there, and the shirtless crowd of Rehoboth regulars, which included a guest appearance by N.Y.s Ryan Peal and Rick Patt, had everything they needed to psyche themselves up for next weekends Morning Party on Fire Island.
If food was what you fancied, then you probably planted yourself either at 3 Country Club or 401 1/2 Bayard. 3 Country Clubs backyard barbecue for the AT&T League was deliciously fun, especially the rainbow-colored Jell-O which, according to a secret source, wiggled and jiggled its way into housemother John Klenerts boudoir later that night. Over at 401 1/2 Bayard, caterer Ric Marino served a fine combination of food and conversation to celebrate Peter Melchiorres 34th birthday. The guestsincluding 10 Terraces Dave Parham, 10 Georges Chris Riss and Tom Minnuto, Miami DJ Mark Kelly and a persistent kitty-cat from next door-were treated to a savory swordfish dinner and a happy birthday spank session that birthday boy Petie described as "painful, humiliating, and downright exciting."
Once Peters butt-cheeks cooled off, he and the rest of the party walked down to 11 Rodney where Michael Bray was turning 30. Again, it was all about singing Happy Birthday and stuffing your face with too much cake (delicious cake, I might add). When the crowd began to sing For Hes a Jolly Good Fellow, 37 Quillens Dan Kyle was surprised to learn that it wasnt to Michael Bray, but instead, for hubby Marvin Miller who was being honored as the winner in 11 Rodneys "Shrimp Eatin Jamboree."
Meanwhile over at Lake Comegys, another group of folks were singing a slightly different tune. Under the Great White Tent that hovered over the backyard of Comegys town home #8, a chorus of men cried, "God Save the Queen" to Nick Eggleston as he arrived to his 50th birthday celebration via rubber dingy. Donning a torch and bearing a striking resemblance to the Statue of Liberty, Nicks entrance was the best so far this summer. Hosts Tim Cabrey, Dave Lyons, Rich McDaniel and Rick Hardy rewarded Miss Liberty with a marvelous $100-a-plate swordfish dinner courtesy of Bill Raineys Taste of Heaven.
Piggybacking the next day under the Lake Comegys tent was the picture perfect Tony Burns and housemates Vance Becker, Jerry Gallucci, Conrad Welch, and Matt McCloy from #7. Together, they hosted a splendid Sunday brunch complete with ham, eggs, fresh fruit, muffins, mimosas and about a dozen 35mm cameras strategically placed throughout the yard in case an unexpected Kodak moment occurred. Later in the evening, Tony and his cameras were spotted at the Renegade where PRIDE 97 was underway. Just about every year-round resident came out for this special event as did some summer people too! And yes-if you were there-Tony probably took a picture of you. What Tony should take photos of, however, are the checks that will be presented to this years PRIDE beneficiaries SCAC and the JIM Fund. PRIDE 97 raised approximately $30,000!
Last weekend it rained on our Saturday afternoon parade, but only for a couple hours. While waiting for the sun to arrive, many of us explored downtown Rehoboth. Shops at the First Street Station are now open as well as Slides ice cream next to Lingos Market. For personal pampering, poodle boys popped into Chameleons on Rehoboth Ave. for its huge selection of massage oils, shampoos, lotions, and aroma therapy products. Dirty White Boy was bustling with young men looking for some club wear for the evening. The new EFFXX, another cool clothing shop, would have been busy, too, but the sign on the closed door said they had gone to the gym.
After squeezing in a few good hours on the beach, Rehoboth was welcomed at the "La More, La Merrier Lounge" over at 302 Laurel from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Here, the crowd gathered for martinis and was dazzled by the stunning Sassy LaRue; a six- foot-five diva with spike heels and swords for finger nails. The music was definitely groovy, and the attendees were more than merry when they began winning free T-shirts and tape compilations. As for Miss LaRue, shell be showcased in the next Rehoboth Beach Gayzette, but be careful if you should ever meet her in person. For some reason, she gets very angry when you call her Brian. Congratulations to hosts Jerry Alderfer, Jack Strogus, Tom Peightel, Terry Isner, Mark Liberson, Dean Franclik, Willard Heuser, Jim H., and of course, Mr. Barber for a swingin good time.
Once the 9:00 hour rolled around last Saturday, there were still two parties to go, and then dancing at Cloud 9 and the Renegade. Kicking off the late night festivities was 13 Terraces surprise 40th birthday party for Marty Marge Horwath. Housemates Don Blyler, Dave McDonnell, Kevin Keller, John Swift, Dan Burkhardt and Rob Rosenbluth dressed themselves and decorated their Terrace home in black to signify that they were in mourning for the official death of Martys youth. Some gifts included a box of Depends, energy boosting vitamins, and a walking stick for Marty, who has reportedly checked into therapy since then. "Some friends they are," barked Marty. "Even the cake was black!" But thats a whole other story...
Not far from 13 Terrace, birthday bells were ringing for Rob Williams over at 901 King Charles. They probably rang a bit too loud because the party, which was invitation only (and held completely indoors), saw the arrival of just about every beach boy in Rehoboth (See what happens when you give Chris Riss invitations to pass out?) Even after turning away many party-goers, acting housemother Rod Douglas still had to deal with the police who said they received complaints about the noise. The question is: "What noise?" Things were awfully quiet on the outside. Apparently, some non-admitted partiers made the call. Either way, the party inside was pretty damn good, and it set the mood for the remainder of the evening.
Last Sunday, the Blue Moon and manager Rob Dick hosted Island Madness, a kick-off for SUNDANCE, a benefit for SCAC and CAMP. The live congo band and bamboo decor transformed everyones favorite bar into a tropical paradise. This party had more spirit than one can imagine and made the excitement begin to stir for our favorite Labor Day event. Next weekend, on August 16th, get ready to get wet. If youre at all familiar with 3 Country Clubs annual Squirt Gun Party, then you know what I mean.
