August has arrived once again and theres nothing we can do to slow down the swiftly passing days of Summer. Ive always said that it really doesnt matter what the first part of the summer is like, its these last few wonderful weeks that color our memories of the season and provide us with dreams for the middle of next winter. Anyway, happy August, may it be filled with all the magic and beautiful weather that weve come to expect from this time of the year.
Speaking of magic, in this issue Patricia Nell Warren talks about the Disney boycott organized by the Southern Baptistssomething thats been on my mind lately. Somehow, the absurdity of the whole situation would make me laugh, except it is not funny when people act in such a hateful way. The Southern Baptists are far from united on this issue, and while Disneys profits dont seem to be hurting, lets not miss an opportunity to support Disney and their network, ABC. Its about time for a Hercules party, dont you think?
Saturday, August 9, is Election Day in Rehoboth with three candidates running for two seats on the Rehoboth Beach Board of Commissioners. At this point, Bitsy Cochran is the only candidate who has actively sought to be heard by readers of LETTERS FROM CAMP REHOBOTH. Earlier in the season, she wrote an open letter asking for support. She called again today to answer questions and hear the concerns of our community. She hopes to be reelected so that she will be able to continue working for all of us. Rehoboth has finally begun to appreciate its uniqueness and its diversity. I hope to see you at the polls on Saturday.
It is now officially SUNDANCE season in Rehoboth and with over 300 hosts, supporters, and sponsors we are hoping to make it the best one yet. Many of you, both as individuals and business owners, will be receiving information about the SUNDANCE Auction in the next couple of days. We will be following up with calls, or if you prefer, bring the items to CAMP Rehoboth. The auction has become a favorite part of SUNDANCEand brings in an enormous amount of the total money raised. In this, the tenth year of this benefit, we are again seeking fabulous items, services, trips, entertainment, and meals to help us reach our goal. Tickets will be on sale at CAMP Rehoboth and Lambda Rising after August 15, or you can purchase them in advance by calling BOX Office Tickets at 1-800-494-TIXS. To those of you who are new to the area, and to those who may have forgotten, SUNDANCE is a two night event at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center held over Labor Day Weekend. Saturday, August 30, is the Auction and Cocktail Party, and Sunday August 31, the dance. Tickets always go fast, so dont wait too long.
On a personal note, I wanted to wish a happy fourth anniversary to Linda Bova and Bridget Bauer. And speaking from experience in a long relationshipMurray and I will celebrate 19 years at SUNDANCEit keeps getting better as the years go by. On a not so happy note, I offer my deepest sympathy to Georgette Schaefer (Plumb Loco) on the death of her daughter on July 16, after a prolonged illness. And to Pam Hertel (Air Traffic) on the loss of her dear friend Joan Lombardi. Joy and sorrow are often mixed up togetherbut I guess thats all just a part of life.
