In Brief |
Local Gym Owner Takes the Plunge Local gym owner and trainer, Paul Timmons, announced that he will "take the plunge" for Beebe and swim across the bay from Cape Henlopen, Delaware to Cape May, New Jersey, in support of the Tunnell Cancer Center. Born and raised in Rehoboth Beach, Timmons, 37, has owned The Firm for 8 years and been a local personal trainer for 13 years. A 5-time Ironman Triathlon finisher, 6-time finisher of The Great Chesapeake Bay Swim of 4.4 miles and with 16 marathon finishes, including Boston, under his belt, Paul is a passionate athlete. "My Grandfather has recently had to fight cancer and spent time at the Tunnell Cancer Center. He is now cancer-free and I have Beebe to thank for that!" Paul stated. In May, Paul finished a first of its kind 3.25-mile swim around Alcatraz island near San Francisco and most recently, a 12.5-mile swim around Key West, Florida in June. This will be his biggest swimming challenge to date, however. The distance from Cape Henlopen to Cape May is 11.4 miles, but he will have to swim significantly more than that because it is impossible to swim in a straight line. Even though the distance is technically less than Timmons's longest competitive swim, he really has no idea how much distance he will have to cover to get across. "The currents are cross currents for the most part, so the path across will resemble an S." Timmons also said, "The Cape May/Cape Henlopen swim has been attempted before by others, but never completed. It has been successfully completed as a two-person relay, and one of the swimmers is a friend of mine and former English Channel swimmer who I train with from time to time." The benefit swim is scheduled for mid to late July, depending on conditions. For more information, call Beebe Medical Foundation at 302-644-2900. "There is about 20 minutes in Hello, Dolly!, just before and while Dolly is in the Harmonia Gardens Restaurant, when things become outrageous!," said director and choreographer Ken Skrzesz. "Christopher will be portraying Ernestina Money. Ernestina is the person that Dolly uses to make sure Horace will propose. Ernestina is the catalyst that seals the fate between Horace and Dolly. He stated, "In my business, which is mainly portraying females, there are no small parts, only tight shoes!"
