Rehoboth Art League Displays Impressions of Japan |
The exhibition Impressions of Japan will be on display at the Rehoboth Art League from January 29 through February 28. This diverse gathering of Japanese works of art will explore the many facets of Japans rich and complex cultural tradition. Accompanying the display will be a varied program of demonstrations and lectures. Throughout Japans history, the appearance, themes, and uses of works of art have been influenced by the artists who made them and the patrons who owned them. Austere bamboo tea utensils and roughly shaped one-of-a-kind tea bowls were enjoyed in subdued, ritualized settings meant to focus the senses and to concentrate on the moment at hand. In contrast, brilliantly painted images on folding screens glittering with gold leaf impressed visitors with the owners wealth and prestige. These diverse visual images create a series of impressions that together form a larger glimpse of Japans cultural heritage. Impressions of Japan will include works of art in a variety of media including paintings, calligraphy, ceramics, lacquerware, and textiles by Japanese artists of the Edo period (1615-1867) to the 20th century. A selection of ceramics, calligraphy, and photographs by contemporary artists provides a sample of the continuation and expansion of Japanese artistic tradition into the present and beyond the countrys shores. A unique slide presentation and lecture given by Tracy Ann Causey-Jeffrey will present an overview of Japanese art, focusing on the Edo period. The lecture will be held on Sunday, February 7 at 2 p.m. in the Homestead Mansion at the Rehoboth Art League. A variety of media and themes will be explored. Causey-Jeffrey, owner of the Finer Side Gallery in Salisbury, MD, received a bachelors in Asian art history from the University of Pennsylvania and a masters in Asian arts with a concentration in Far East Asian history from the University of London in conjunction with Sothebys. School tours, lectures, and activities will be available for school classes by the education and outreach coordinator. A teacher's packet, complete with lesson plans and visuals, was also prepared to go with the exhibit. A childrens activity packet will be available for all children who visit Impressions of Japan. A computer with a CD-Rom which gives a virtual tour of Edo will be accessible at the gallery for all visitors to "play" and learn with. EXHIBIT AND ALL ACTIVITIES ARE FREE!
