LETTERS From CAMP Rehoboth |
Letters to LETTERS |
Dear Camp Rehoboth,
I found the June issue of LETTERS in my local lesbian owned used book storeI live in Sarasota, Floridaand was so excited to find your magazine. My brother (who is not family) lives in Washington, DC and talks about going to Rehoboth Beach all the time. I am going to save this magazine and intend to come up your way for my next vacation. It seems like you have a great community there, and I have to admit that is a wonderful thing. We (Sarasota) are a very, very "family" city, but we do not have much community. I am on the board of Pridefest, and we are in the process of planning our first Pridefest Parade for October 1999. It is just too hot to do the big outside fun day in June here on the sunny coast of Florida. Well, it sure was great to find your paper. Tricia Wheeler Dear Friends at CAMP Rehoboth: As you know, our adversaries on the right have been organizing in cities, towns, and communities around the country to deny lesbian and gay people their basic civil rights. This year we have seen particularly targeted rhetoric, as evidenced by the anti-gay ad campaign of the past few months. It is becoming increasingly clear that the new target of the right is our families. Work is under way in several states to limit, restrict, or even ban same sex couples from adopting or providing foster care to children. We need your help! In order to effectively combat these initiatives in a strategic and powerful way, we must have a greater understanding of the extent of the issue. If you know of an upcoming or potential initiative in your state, please share with us that information. If you have copies of the legislation itself, a summary of proposed legislation, or news clippings, please share it with us as soon as possible. Thank you so much for your help. You are the eyes and ears of the HRC Field Department as we attempt to craft a unified federal strategy to respond to these statewide and local issues. If you have any questions or concerns, please dont hesitate to call me directly at 202-216-1541 or e-mail me at donna.red.wing@hrc.org. Sincerely, Donna Red Wing Human Rights Campaign Dear Editor: SUNDANCE 98 was the best everall the way from the eclectic display and savory food at the auction, to the delightful music of Mark Thomas and the splendid decor at the dance. On behalf of all the guys at 212 Philadelphia, thanks to everyone at CAMP Rehoboth for putting on such a great show for such a great cause! Sincerely, Chuck Fant and Michael Coventry 212 Philadelphia Dear Steve, I started doing the "Weekend Update" (a local news summary) earlier this summer, and I found your e-mail address and thought you might be interested. My dream has been for Rehoboth to have its own listserv/majordomo (e-mail reflector) that concerned citizens could join to share opinions about Rehoboth. We come from Takoma Park where three such e-mail lists cater to town folk. Theyve been a powerful medium for sharing ideas and staying informed. Ive attempted to contact a few people at UD and DelTech in hopes of finding a free sponsor. Ill keep trying. (CAMPnote: see "On-Line" article, page 5.) Im a loyal scanner listener and have been a summertime Rehoboth resident for more than 20 years. It would be an honor if you could use any of the "updates" for articles. Its refreshing to see someone with your expertise filling a needed niche. You have a great publication. If I can be of any help, please feel free to let me know. Alan Henney Dear Steve, This letter is to thank Manos restaurant for the wonderful "surprise" party they provided on Deauville Beach to celebrate Eda Lou Higgins birthday August 8, 1998. Not one detail was over-looked, and all the extra efforts they made, with it being on the beach, were appreciated by myself and the 50 guests. Fine job Dan, Helen, Gregg and your entire staff. Eda Lou called it "magic." Sincerely, Patty Brittingham, a.k.a The "Rehoboth Hobo" Dear CAMP Rehoboth, Conservative Christians have been bombarding NIKE with e-mails in support of pro-football player Reggie White, a spokesman for Nike, following his discriminatory language against lesbians and gay men from his March 25th speech to the Wisconsin Legislature and subsequent dialog on ABC-TVs 20/20. Nike has received much more support for Reggie, than protests from persons supportive of lesbian and gay Civil Rights. Your voices are needed! Send Nike a message that Reggie must go! http://www.nike.com. Sincerely, Beth Dewson |
