Delaware's HR 466 - Update on Employment Non-Discrimination Act |
by Beth Dewson |
It is now certain that HR 466a bill to amend Delawares Employment Non-Discrimination Act to include sexual orientationwill be voted on in the House before the break on April 9. The General Assembly reconvenes on April 28, 1998.
On Saturday, April 4, the Women and the Law Section of the Delaware Bar Association unanimously endorsed HR 466 after a presentation was given at their annual retreat. They will ask for the endorsement of the DBA at the next meeting on April 14. Senator Sorenson told me that she has been receiving numerous calls from Boy Scout organizations opposing our bill and indicating that they want to be included in the exemptions. She thought that perhaps she was receiving so many calls because her son is an Eagle Scout. However, she expressed concern about the number of calls. If you are a constituent of Sorensons it would help to drop her a line reminding her of your support of her position to support this bill. If you are aware of other calls about this issue to legislators, please let me know. We may need to prepare literature to send out due to the number of calls and recent court rulings in NJ and CA. At last count, we have 15 of the 21 votes that we need to pass this bill in the House. In the event that it is not voted on this week, we still need to keep in direct contact with legislators on this bill. Continue to encourage others to call also. |
