Little Voice Shown on Big Screen at the June 16 Film Society Meeting |
Film Society MeetingThe Rehoboth Beach Film Society will present the 1998 musical-comedy Little Voice at its upcoming monthly meeting at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 16, at Dogfish Head Brewings and Eats, 320 Rehoboth Avenue.
Based on Jim Cartwrights award-winning stage play, Little Voice was the cinematic vehicle for three "big" performances that garnered a host of Golden Globe and Oscar nominations earlier this year. The film, which runs 99 minutes, was written and directed by Mark Herman (Brassed-Off) and stars Jane Horrocks, Brenda Blethyn, Michael Caine and Ewan McGregor. Little Voice tells the story of Little Voice (LV), played by Horrocks (Absolutely Fabulous, Life Is Sweet) as the pathetically shy recluse who listens to her late fathers old records and drives her abusive, loud-mouthed mother, Mari, played by Blethyn (Secrets And Lies) to distraction. At night, however, when her fathers ghost visits, LV sings the songs of the great divas such as Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe. One of Maris loathsome boyfriends, the disastrous dead-end talent scout Ray Say (Caine, in his Golden Globe-winning performance), recognizes LVs innate talent and realizes this is his last chance at the big time. Gambling everything, Ray forces LV to appear at a local run-down, seedy night club. As preparations for the big event proceed, LV meets the equally shy Billy, played by McGregor (Star Wars, Trainspotting), a pigeon-racing telephone engineer with whom she forms a tentative, gentle friendship. Soon the big night arrives and everything is ready; the band, the club and even a big agent from London. But what about LV?
