Mining Down Memory Lane Most adults have scattered memories of time spent with their grandparents. For artist Brian Petro, the afternoons he spent with PapPap Petro have provided him with the most vivid memories of his childhoodwith piercing sounds and sharp smells that will stay with him forever. His grandfather, John Petro, was a coal miner in central Pennsylvania. Brian recalls spending winter afternoons in grandpa's basement, working with the rudimentary tools of the time to build everything from furniture to holiday decorationsall the while shoveling coal from the hopper into the furnace. The brittle texture of the oil-laden rock was fascinating to him and he would crush it in his palms before laying the pieces in the shovel. Last year, John Petro passed away after a short battle with cancer. As Brian walked through his grandfather's house after the funeral, all those memories came rushing back. Back in his studio, Brian pounded and crushed the coal, controlling the crystal sizes to ensure variety in the clumps. After creating some visceral strokes with black ink on Arches paper, he affixed the rock (in varying sizes from super-fine grit to 2-carat diamond-like clumps) with different adhesives and varnishes to bring out the reflective qualities of the coal. "This new series is extremely personal to me," Brian has said of the coal work. "It honors my grandfather's years of labor and his coal-mining history." Brian's Bituminous Coal and Ink series will be on display at Cloud 9 from Aug. 18 to Sept. 19. There will be an opening reception on Sunday, August 19th from 3 to 5 p.m. Cloud 9 is located at 234 Rehoboth Avenue in Rehoboth Beach.
