Art at the Beach
Though I've had to tell myself to keep moving so that I don't grow moss on my north side with all the rain we've had, I don't think it will be difficult to keep moving with everything going on around town at this time of year... ART GALLERIES AerieArt Gallery (45 1/2 Lake Avenue and First St. Station; 302-227-5376/227-4776; rehoboth.com/aerieart) specializes in fine original paintings from the 19th and early 20th centuries, and offerings by local artists including Denise Dumont, Victor Letonoff, Lesley McCaskill and Karin Snoots. Through early June, the Lake Avenue gallery is featuring Larry Horowitz Returnspaintings by the nationally-known artist who returns to Rehoboth in June to give a class at the Rehoboth Art League. The Rehoboth Avenue gallery presents Recurrent Dreams: The Paintings of Edward Grant (1907-1998). Both locations open daily except Tuesday, or by appointment. Amandeline Galleries (403 Rehoboth Avenue in Rehoboth Beach; 302-226-0330; amandelinegallery.com) Celebrating their third year by introducing new floral artist Yan Ding, whose style is reminiscent of Georgia O'Keefe. Detail Gallery (54 Baltimore Avenue in Rehoboth Beach; 302-227-8170; shopdetail.com) Detail Gallery will usher in the summer with a coffee and Danish get together on Monday May 25, from 10-2 p.m. Stop by for breakfast and check out the great selection of artwork by 35 different artists. While you're there, check out their fun Mirabelle, the Boston terrier products. Gallery 50 (50-A Wilmington Avenue in Rehoboth Beach; 302-227-2050; 50contemporaryart.com) celebrates their second anniversary with an opening by Dutch artist Gerardus Jilesenthe first international artist represented by the gallery. An opening reception will take place on Saturday, May 23rd from 5-8 p.m. As part of the celebration of the gallery's second anniversary, Keith Mack entertains on acoustic guitar. Panache Gallery (129-B Rehoboth Avenue; 302-227-9229; panachegalleryde.com) Panache has a wonderful variety of Henrietta Glass aromatherapy reed diffusers, vases, and candle holders that add a pop of color and a smile to any room. Peninsula Gallery (520 E. Savannah Rd in Lewes; 302-645-0551; peninsula-gallery.com) presents The Art of Architecture a group show with Andrew Criss (oil), Roger Dellar (oil), Nancy McIntyre (acrylic), Fred Rodger (acrylic), John Schisler (oil) and Bill Snow (oil) through May 27. Opening May 30 is their Fine Arts and Crafts exhibit by selected members of Delaware By Hand. Included in the show will be basketry, ceramics, collage, glass, jewelry, painting, stone, and wood through June 30. Visit their website to view all images in the exhibit. Rehoboth Art League (12 Dodds Lane in Henlopen Acres; 302-227-8408; rehobothartleague.org) The Corkran Gallery features the botanical and figurative work of Maryland artist Valerie Watson (Individual Artist Grant: Maryland State Arts Council; Governor's Award of Merit) a Visual Art Specialist at the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and Adjunct Professor at the Prince George's Community College. The Tubbs Gallery, at the Art League, features Works On Paper by Lori Crawford (2008 Fellowship Grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts and currently works as Associate Professor of Art at Delaware State University)Bag-Itan ongoing project of Crawford'sis a collection of brown paper bags with photographic images of women which expose color prejudices and other bias acts. Also featured is Crawford's Sista Seriesa tribute to women of color. The Ventures Gallery, at the Art League, features the Eastern Shore-inspired mosaics of Anne Schroeder. A variety of materials such as tile, stained glass, and costume jewelry are incorporated into each piece. Thunderbird Gallery (200 Rehoboth Avenue in Rehoboth Beach; 302-227-1900; thunderbirdshop.com) is pleased to represent artist Thom Millsap, whose acrylic works are specifically of the beach. His use of color is light-hearted and evokes a certain desire to want to be where he's painting. Thom will be doing two one-man shows, the first from June 26-28 when he will be painting in the gallery. Call the gallery for hours. Ward Ellinger Gallery (located in the CAMP Rehoboth Courtyard39 Baltimore Avenue; 302-227-2710; wardellinger.com) featuring Different Strokes, new works by Terry Isner, June 5-26. Artist receptions will be held Saturday, June 6, 5-8 p.m., and Saturday, June 13, 6-9 p.m. Also featuring encaustics (beeswax) paintings interweaving brilliant colors and unique formations by Ward Ellinger. MUSIC All Saints' Episcopal Church (18 Olive Avenue in Rehoboth) will present a series of Thursday organ recitals, beginning June 25th through August 13th at 12:15 p.m. Bach on the Boardwalk features organists Craig Campbell (recently appointed parish music director with degrees from Juilliard and Yale) who has concertized widely on the east coast and in Europe over the past two years, George Bayley, Thomas Tibbetts, and Betsey Von Dreele. Theatre of the Arts (20 Baltimore Ave., Rehoboth Beach; 302-227-9310; RehobothBeachTheatre.com) is proud to present the internationally acclaimed Blues trio SaffireThe Uppity Blues Women on their farewell tour of the United States on Saturday, May 23 beginning at 9 p.m. With six albums and hundreds of appearances, this trio of feisty multiracial, middle-aged, acoustic blues femmes (Ann Rabson, Gaye Adegbalola and Andra Faye) has created a musical legacy with a combination of serious blues songs and comedic novelty songs.
