Though I find it hard to believe that we are already halfway through the month of June, the recent heat wave dispelled any doubts that summer had arrived in full force. With the longest day of the year almost upon us, now is the time to enjoy Rehoboth at its finest: strolling on the boardwalk, dining at our fantastic restaurants, or enjoying the many shops and art galleries around town. Our own summer tradition is an after-dinner walk to Funland to ride the Sea Dragon—in the back row, of course!
Along with the weather, city politics is heating up this summer, and the races for mayor and city commissioner should be interesting ones. On July 22, the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center will host the annual Rehoboth Beach Homeowners Candidate Forum. In the issue of Letters that comes out on Friday, July 29, we will feature the candidate responses from our annual CAMP Rehoboth Candidates Forum. In the mayoral race, Mayor Sam Cooper is being challenged by Tom McGlone; for commissioner, incumbent Commissioners Lorraine Zellers and Dennis Barbour are facing newcomers Mark Hunker and Rick Kirchhoff. Election Day in Rehoboth is August 13.
If you haven’t purchased tickets to Love 2011 on the July 4th weekend, now is the time. Tickets are available at CAMP Rehoboth, or even better, purchase them on our website. The Love weekend starts on Saturday, July 2 (from 8 p.m.-2 a.m.) with the Red Love dance party, featuring the amazing sounds of DJ/Remixer Joe Gauthreaux. On Sunday, July 3 (from 9 p.m.-2 a.m.), DJ Mike Reimer headlines the Blue Love party. Both events are $40 each, or buy a Red and Blue Love Ticket Package for $75. Both events are open bar. Also on Sunday, July 3 (from 4-8 p.m.), will be our very first Ladies 2000, Lady Love Tea Dance with DJ Steve Singer. Lady Love tickets are $15 with a cash bar. Love lighting wizard Paul Turner will be on hand for all three Love events. Purchase Love Tickets
Last year, one of the biggest house parties of the summer, 6 futcher Drive’s annual Pool Party, collected donations for CAMP Rehoboth as a part of the Summer CAMP Beach House Challenge (and won the 2010 challenge in the process). This year, their Studio 54th of July Pool Party will benefit Love Weekend and continue their commitment to the Beach House Challenge. Pool Party attendees are being asked to make a $10 donation at the door, or on the CAMP Rehoboth website (look for the Love 2011 logo on the home page and click on “6 Futcher Pool Party Donation.” It’s fast and easy and you don’t have to worry about carrying money in your bathing suit!
Speaking of the Beach House Challenge, the first challenge event of the 2011 season will be the Boys of Summer, Love Bachelor Auction at Aqua on June18. Beach house sponsored bachelors will win points for their houses and money for Love, so come out, bid on your favorite, and join the fun. On a personal note, I’d like to say a special word of thanks to Aqua’s Joe Maggio and Bill Shields for their generous support, and to Chris Beagle for putting it all together.
Enjoy singing? In September the CAMP Rehoboth Chorus will resume rehearsals for their third season and is looking for new members (especially sopranos). Once the new season starts, the Chorus rehearses on Monday nights at the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center. The CAMP Chorus is open to all singers, and no audition is required. Over the past season the Chorus performed in concert at the Theater of the Arts and as an opening for comic Jennie McNulty during Women’s FEST in April.
With July 4th weekend and the busy months of July and August on the horizon, stop by the CAMP Rehoboth office for information, to volunteer, to purchase tickets, or just to say hello.
