The Mautner Project for Lesbians with Cancer was founded in 1990, the vision of Mary Helen Mautner who died of breast cancer in 1989 at the age of 44. On September 20, 1997 we will celebrate the seventh anniversary of bringing Mary Helens vision into reality with our third annual Embracing Community Gala. The Gala will feature a silent auction, a reception to meet our celebrity guest speaker, a formal dinner, awards presentation, entertainment and dancing. Last year this event was attended by 1,100 individuals and raised over $100,000.
This years event will pay tribute to seven years of providing practical help and emotional assistance to lesbians with cancer, seven years of supporting their partners, seven years of training health care providers to treat lesbian families with sensitivity and respect, and seven years of demanding attention for lesbian health issues in the federal policy arena. And we want you to join us in this celebration.
Based on the increasing numbers and success of the past two years, we are expecting this years gala celebration to attract even more people. We already are receiving requests to purchase tickets to the September 20th event! We invite you to join us again in embracing the lesbian community by purchasing an ad in our Program Book, or by becoming a Sponsor of the Gala.
We need your help to keep our promise that lesbians with cancer will find a thriving network of care and assistance. For information about the Program Book or the Gala, please call 202 332-5536.
Sincerely,
Karen Silberman and Maureen McGeough
