Part of the reason for the Inns success is Danny Barfield, who on June 4 celebrated his 25th anniversary of gracing the dining room as a waiter at the venerable Inn.
"I grew up in Lake Wales, Florida," he Danny, "and in high school I was working at a restaurant called The Plantation. The chef who was there for the winter months was also the chef here at the Corner Cupboard during the summer, and the year after I graduated he convinced me to come to Rehoboth Beach with him and work here."
Danny was smitten, and suddenly 25 years have gone by of summering in Rehoboth, and wintering in Florida. "I like my life this way," Danny explains as he shows photos of "the old days," of him with past waiters hes worked with and now of them with their kids. Photos on the dining room walls tell a history of the comfortable restaurant, and Danny is in almost all of them. Actually, he has been there longer than the owner, Elizabeth Hooper, who purchased the business from her aunt and uncle 23 years ago. "When I called from Florida that year to tell her I was coming back for the summer, her only comment was Who the hell are you," he says laughing.
For the past 10 years Danny has worked in the winter as a waiter at the Bok Tower Garden, a bird and garden sanctuary.
And what keeps him coming back? "The people, the friends Ive made over the years. Theres a magnetism to Rehoboth," he says glowing.
So, head over to the Corner Cupboard for breakfast, brunch or dinner...Danny should be the one with the flashy gold watch! Congratulations, Danny, and heres to many more years of fine service, good health, and great memories!
