It looks like things are finally going to brighten up in Rehoboth Beach. After weeks of rain and chilly temperatures, Mother Nature has agreed to stop her silly charade and allow us to enjoy the summer the way it should be... with sun! And shes just in time, too. Party heels are clickin all over town, and Rehoboths outdoor social scene is about to explode.
Starting us off this summer was 10 Terraces Mike Cap, David Cochran, Rob Crosby, Tom Glassic, Todd Hotham, Bob Oswald, Dave Parham, Tim Price and Ben Stern who delighted us, May 31, with Simply T II. A boisterous crowd of 200 "tea" drinking socializers tapped their toes to the music of DJ Rob Crosby as they reacquainted themselves with each other and the party routine for the season ahead. Never wasting an opportunity to promote LOVE97 (or himself), Tom Minnuto slipped into a slinky, silver sequined dress and scurried through the crowd to pass out heart-shaped magnets. Luckily, drag veteran Paul Robinson was on hand with his "how-to-impersonate-a-diva" kit (complete with Tina/Whitney wig combo) to help the aspiring Miss Minnuto along. The highlight of the Simply T event was the passing out of over-sized, glow-in-the-dark lollipops. "Practice makes perfect," said New Yorks Lance Schiema, who won the evenings award for biggest "sucker."
Across the street, 13 Terraces Marty Horwath, Jon Swift, Dave McDonnell, Dan Burkhardt, Rob Rosenbluth, Jon Donatzko, Don Blyler and Kevin Keller held a birthday celebration for 205 Hickmans Chris Baldridge and their aging housemate. Apparently, Dan was supposed to turn over his princesss crown to the youngest new member of the Terrace clan, Don Blyler. However, young pup Blyler wasnt present for the crowning. In fact, Blyler, according to housemates, has been missing-in-action for some time now. Rumor has it that hes become the new toy mouse over at the Cat House a.k.a. 48 Olive. This message was delivered from house mother Marty Horwath: "Give him back, Paul!"
Last weekend, Brian Creamer and housemates at 2 Blackstone threw an after hours party on Friday nightthe first of many more to come, no doubt. Brians troupe still holds the record for having the most after hours parties in a single season. This year, however, they can probably expect some stiff competition from neighbors Mark Cunningham and Ken Tattersall at 24 Annie B. Street. When asked how he planned to stay on top, a confused Brian Creamer replied, "Who told you I was a top?"
The following day, Rehoboths pioneer photographer Tony Burns hosted yet another Preakness Party while Edsall Gayoso and Frank Suprenant (would the real house mother please step forward?) held a birthday dinner in honor of Bill Deal at 211 Lake.
Because of the glum weather, happy hour at the Blue Moon, Cloud 9, and Savannahs was jammin', while others shopped at the newly opened EFFXX clothing store and then stopped by The Coffee Mill for a mid-day cappuccino.
This weekend, plan on attending the Blue Moons annual Bachelor Auction on Saturday, June 14th from 5 to 8 p.m. (and be sure to check out the pretty blue lights overhead hung by two able bodied men, with assistance from the Moons bar manager Rob Dick). Heres the scoop on the auction: A hot young man enters the Moon courtyard, reaches into a bag and pulls out a certificate for dinner for two donated by one of several fine Rehoboth restaurants. If you like him, and the restaurant, or if you just want to give your money to a good cause, raise your hand and bid. May the richest man (or woman) win!!! All the money raised during this event will be donated to LOVE97, a benefit for Food and Friends of DC, SCAC (the Sussex County AIDS Committee), HERO of Baltimore, and A.I.N. of Philadelphia. To those of you who attended the Bachelor Auction last year and melted at the sight of Michael Walkers rather exposed buns, come and check out this years line-up. Some of the "boys" being auctioned are 901 King Charles manly Matt Blocher, 213 Rodneys enticing Tom Palmer, 10 Georges hunky Kevin V., and 211 Lakes juicy Jesse Ruhl. Last year, 211 Lakes Ralph Clapier sold on the auction block for a whopping $3,200, thanks to Rehoboths matriarch and Blue Moon owner Joyce Felton. This year, Joyces bid will be the one to beat (if you dare!)
Next weekend, the cavalry at 901 King Charles (Patrick Menasco, David Benning, Matt Blocher, Bruce Bornfleth, Rod Douglas, Richie Eckert, Tom Korakis, Scott Wells, Bryon Fusini, John Gallagher, Mike Kearns, Paul Hofer, Hans Kline and Rob Williams, Rob Manley, Ralph Randazzo and Matt Snyder and John Talkington) will be donning Boxers and Beads for their second annual backyard blow-out. This time around, theyve added a twist to their costume requirementa third B-word. Youll just have to wait until the invitations come out to see what new article of clothing or object that begins with the letter B will be required attire. Boots? Braziers? Bandanas? How about bull whips? Which ever, the event should be a blast. Other news in King Charles land comes from a rumor about a new outdoor hot tub that has been installed there for the summer. Scheduled to appear for a late night dip are expert jacuzzi schmoozers Gary Seiden and Jon Daly and Michael Nguyen from 119 Norfolk. Part-time lifeguard Peter Melchiorre has not been invited due to rumors that he insists on performing mouth-to-mouth on various guests regardless of their condition.
Looking ahead, expect a wild and crazy July 4th weekend with a "by invitation only" party for the LOVE97 sponsors at Bill Goldsteins home from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the 4th, an Independence Day celebration at 10 George from 9 p.m. to midnight that same night, a spectacular art show by Murray Archibald on Saturday the 5th from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Blue Moon and the LOVE97 main event that evening at the convention center from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Keep your party hats on cause 213 Rodney is bringing us the unsinkable Titanic Party and 11 Robinson has some hot ideas cooking for their Apron Party.
In addition to all the parties ahead, Renegade Manager Wayne Hodge promises to supply dance-a-holics with a guest DJ every Saturday night. This Saturday, step on the dance floor with Palm Springs DJ Tommy Walton, and in two weeks, Baltimore DJ Steve Henderson will take you for a spin Allegro-style.
Finally, BEACH BOOK 97 is here! Pick up your copy at CAMP Rehoboth at 39 Baltimore Avenue or chase down Tom Minnuto and his little fanny-pack on the beach. Admission tickets for LOVE97 and raffle tickets can also be purchased through Tom on the beach or at CAMP Rehoboth.
