This issue of Letters from CAMP Rehoboth hits the streets a week before the big Fourth of July weekend and at 72 pages is 16 pages larger than we have ever published before. Once again, my thanks go out to the incredible business community that supports CAMP Rehoboth and all that we do, as well as the uncountable number of individuals who make "life in CAMP" possible. I know I say it over and over, but this community (this family, if you read Glen Pruitts column) really makes everything worthwhile. Im always glad to see how we pull together when needed.
The weather is finally cooperating and summer has definitely arrived, though I did notice that we somehow went right from complaining about how cold it was to complaining about the heat. Anyway, its summer finally, and just in time for the holiday festivities. As always, the weekend of the Fourth will be packed with fun and games and, as I said last issue, will climax with the first ever Rehoboth Beach fireworks display on Sunday, July 6 at the Rehoboth Avenue/Boardwalk junction.
Last Saturday night I had the pleasure of attending the Fay Jacobs directed Sondheims Broadway, at La Rosa Negra Restaurant in Lewes. We all know that Fay is talented from the way she keeps us smiling with her CAMPout column, and now here she comes again wearing a different hat (and sitting in the directors chair!) I suppose its hard for me to be completely unbiased here, but bravo, Fay, and congratulations to all involved. It is a terrifically fun evening that can also be seen on June 27 and 28. For reservations or more information, call La Rosa Negra Restaurant at 645-1980.
Once again we come to the time of the year when volunteers are needed. CAMP Rehoboth, SCAC, KSAP, PRIDE, SUNDANCE , The JIM Fund, MCC, PFLAG, The Michael Brossette Fund, and, of course, LOVE97, all depend on the generosity, love and support of volunteers. There are big jobs available, and not so big jobs as well, but just about everyone could use a helping hand this time of year. Volunteers, sponsors, hosts, board members, ticket sellers, auction item donors and collectors and buyersthe list is endless. Its also fun, isnt it? It must be, because so many of the same people keep coming back year after year.
I cant talk about fundraisers without one final reminder of the spectacular LOVE97 dance party on Saturday, July 5, at the Rehoboth Convention Center. Its the main event of the Fourth of July weekend and not to be missed. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, let me say again that this event raises money for AIDS groups in Rehoboth, Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia. One of the things that makes Rehoboth special is the way friends from so many places can come together for a few short weeks every year, and LOVE is a great example of what happens when we do.
Im glad Im a part of this family we call Rehoboth. Have a safe and fun holiday weekend, and from all of us living deep in CAMP, happy Fourth of July.
