Lesbian Health Initiative Begins Fundraising Drive
Editors note: I realize most people reading this will be at the beach on August 29 and unable to participate in the following event. However, it is an important new initiative in Delaware, and I hope you will consider showing your support in some way. The Lesbian Health Initiative (LeHI) announced today that its first fundraiser will be an "Extravagina" Party at ROAM in Wilmington, Delaware, on Saturday, August 29, at 9pm. Highlights will include shooter girls and door prizes. Tickets are $5, available at the door, and all ticket proceeds will benefit LeHI. LeHI is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the physical and emotional well-being of lesbians in Delaware through education, outreach, referral, and advocacy. The money raised in the fundraiser will help to launch its first major efforts, the Breast Cancer Awareness Project and a health care providers referral list. "We want LeHI to fill the gap in information and services for lesbians throughout Delaware by educating lesbians, service providers, and government agencies and insurance corporations about the particular needs and issues facing lesbians," says Taj Carson, one of LeHIs board members. "Our starting point will be to educate lesbians about their elevated risk of breast cancer and to help them get the services they need." ROAM is located at 913 Shipley Street in downtown Wilmington, just minutes from I-95. The coffeehouse will begin at 9:00 p.m. For more information or for driving directions, please call Deb at 302-427-2171. Possum Point Players Bring Sylvia Back to the Stage Back by popular demand, Possum Point Players production of Sylvia will be shown at the Del Tech Community College Theatre in Georgetown the last weekend in August. This A.L. Gurney sophisticated comedy was first shown off-Broadway starring Sarah Jessica Parker as Sylvia, a dog who comes between a middle aged man and his wife. Set in New York City, the play has a number of very interesting characters including Tom/Phyllis/Leslie played by local actor Dick Pack. Fresh from his role of Sylvia St. Croix in Second Street Players Ruthless, Pack is the only member of the cast that was not part of the original Possum Point Players January production. Jim Hartzell, co-director of the production, said, "When the role became available I immediately thought of Dick. He was terrific in Ruthless and while both characters are different they do have one thing in commonthey are both women played by a man." "Dick is terrific in this role," said his co-star Rebecca Craft. "There is nothing like seeing Dick Pack in heels." Sylvia will be performed August 28 and 29 at 8:00 p.m. and on August 30 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets: $10; $8 for Seniors and Students at the matinee only. To reserve tickets, call the Possum Point Players ticket line at 302-856-4560. |
