Have You Had a Chance to Taste Heaven Yet? |
by Fay Jacobs |
Oh, the wonderful things Bill Raneywith most of his family as support staffis cooking up at Taste of Heaven in historic Lewes, Delaware! The little restaurant with the big reputation for gourmet lunches and dinners and innovative cooking, Taste of Heaven has become so popular that Chef Bill had to recruit both Dad and Sister Lisa to work with him. Bill, a former chef at the Rehoboth Beach Yacht and Country Club, opened Taste of Heaven at a previous location a few doors down the street from where it is today. The new location gave him the capacity to expand beyond his famous breakfast and lunch fare into gourmet dinners. And heavenly is not too strong an adverb for Taste of Heavens creations. From the signature Cranberry and Orange Duck Pate appetizer ($6.95) to the Crispy seared Red Snapper in a Thai Green Curry Shrimp Sauce ($19.95), the menu is brimming with contemporary American cuisine that tastes as fabulous as it looks. The dinner menu offers the chefs selections of meats, seafood and chicken, with inventive sauces and accompaniments. Try the Chargrilled veal chop with roasted garlic and Shiitake mushrooms in a demi glaze over house mashed potatoes ($20.95); and then theres the crab cake a la southwest ($22.95)sauteed with cumin and cornmeal crusted soft-shell crab on a bed of vegetables with polenta, cilantro pesto and pico de gallo. Its not just trendy, it is terrific. On the lighter side, lunch at Taste of Heaven offers a dozen International gourmet sandwiches ($5.95-6.95) including Marinated Roasted Portabello mushrooms, a Mu Shu Pork Roll, a greek Gyro, Peppered Roast Beef, Marinated Eggplant, chicken salad on French Baguette, Virginia Ham, and more. The list is dazzling. You can order a Hummus platter, Pate, three salad sampler, and other luscious dishes. A Taste of Heaven is located right in the heart of historic Lewes at 107 Second Street near the canal bridge. But I advise calling them first at 644-1962 to make reservations, especially for dinnertheres a small number of seats, and its almost always busy! And by the way, if you want a real taste of heaven try the homemade desserts. Chef Bill Raney is a magician when it comes to sweets. See you there! |
