SUNDANCE XII: Rainbow Renaissance |
by Glen Pruitt |
For many people in the Rehoboth Beach/Lewes area, the ninth page of their calendars has a misprint. Instead of the heading "SEPTEMBER", the page should be titled "SUNDANCE". That certainly is true for Steve Elkins and Murray Archibald, organizers of the annual event. "SUNDANCE is simply a part of our lives," explains Murray. "We plan almost everything around this event!" For the twelfth consecutive year, SUNDANCE will happen over Labor Day Weekend. This year the two-day charity fundraiser will again be held at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center. The Auction will be held on Saturday, September 4th, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. More than 300 items will be showcased in a live and a silent auction accompanied by a cocktail buffet and an open bar. The Dance will be held on Sunday, September 5th, from 8:00 PM to 2:00 a.m., with music by Mark Thomas and lights by Kurt Wunsch. An open bar and the best in dance music will greet the dancers that night. Continuing a SUNDANCE tradition, local artist Murray Archibald has contributed one of his works for inclusion in the Live Auction. This year's work, entitled "Renaissance", is also the theme for this year's event. "The primary imagery is the red ribbon and the rose. The curling of the ribbon and the opening of the rose symbolize continuing growth," explains Murray. "However, there are also other designs in the work that bleed through the subject and onto the objects in the foreground. One of those patterns is the playing card the Queen of Hearts, and in fact, the painting is part of the Queen of Heart Series from my 1999 show." The fierce bidding for Murray's painting is usually one of the highlights of Saturday night's Auction. Unfortunately there can be only one winning bidder. Fortunately for everyone else, limited edition prints of the painting will be available. The signed prints, which will sell for $45.00, will be available in August and at the event. SUNDANCE raises money for two local charitable organizations, the Sussex County AIDS Committee (SCAC) and CAMP Rehoboth. SCAC provides direct services for residents of Sussex County with HIV infection or AIDS. CAMP Rehoboth is a community service organization dedicated to creating a more positive environment in Rehoboth Beach and its related communities. "Things have gotten off to a great start," continues Archibald. "We have some new corporate sponsors this year, including DuPont Pharmaceuticals and Beebe Medical Center." Individuals and businesses may financially support the event at a number of different levels, starting at only $100.00. Items are also being sought for the Silent and Live Auctions. Local merchants, residents and supporters usually donate these items. Donors to the auction have discovered not only is it a great way to give to charity, it's also great publicity for their businesses. SUNDANCE is lucky to have a group of people who consistently support the event, but there is always room for more!
