51st Rehoboth Art League Cottage Tour |
Eight Rehoboth area cottages will open their doors on Tuesday, July 11th and Wednesday, July 12th from noon until 5 p.m. to benefit the Rehoboth Art League. The original purpose of The Cottage Tour of Art, which began 51 years ago, was to showcase Art League member's works in summer cottages. It is still a wonderful way to enjoy beautiful art, explore wonderful homes, and support the Rehoboth Art League. The homes presented on this year's tour include: 124 Columbia Avenue, The Pines: Once a summer boarding house for men, it still bears the sign "Jackson Cottage." Now it is a year-round retreat for Marcia and Henry De Witt and their extended family. The house has been renovated several times, most recently to incorporate the wrap-around screened porch and construct the dramatic octagonal cupola in front. Truly a sampling of "Old Rehoboth" One Fourth Street, The Pines: The summer home of Dorrie and Henry Leader was built in 1922 by Colonel George Arrowsmith, and served as an Officers' Club during World War II. Works of local artists can be seen throughout the house as well as furnishings from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. The "Little House", once a garage, is now a comfy cottage for guests. 82 Park Avenue, The Pines: With "determined vision", Matt Shepard and Jim Johnson bought a two-story garage on this property in 1998 and transformed it into this delightful four-square, Arts and Crafts style bungalow. For a "fun Hollywood look," they use posters of old movies as part of their decorating scheme. For local interest, they display framed arrangements of old Rehoboth postcards. 8 Rodney Street, South Rehoboth: Enter into a work in progress a few steps from the ocean. You'll feel like Alice in Wonderland. More than one trip is needed to see and appreciate all there is to Tom and artist Patti Shreeve's newest "habitat." Enjoy the traditional artwork of the resident artist and others. Seek out the chairs, dressers, lamps, and more that have received a new life under Patti's capable hands. 117 Silver Lake Drive, Silver Lake: Kathy and Ed Albers received the 1999 Rehoboth Beach Cottage and Town Award for Renovation of their Arts and Crafts style home. Nautical decorating accents abound, including: boat models, fish, maps, and photographs. Be sure to visit the woodsy patio, sunny pool areas, and historic Sears-model pool house currently undergoing renovation. 64 Kings Creek Circle, Kings Creek Country Club: Throw yourself into selecting every detail, large and small of the design and construction of a new home and you have an inkling of two years in the life of Dan and Nancy Pressley. There is harmony here between nature and humanity that is unique and delightful. Their eclectic art collection highlights places they have lived and visited, as well as artists whose work they admire. 10 Alexander Court, Kings Creek Country Club: Airiness and lightness welcome you to the home of Bill and Tillie McHugh. Much of the furniture reflects their appreciation of family heirlooms and years of collecting. Avid collectors, the McHughs display their finds throughout their home. Some of the artwork has been in the family for years, others are mementos of their travels. 3 Coventry Road, Rehoboth Beach Yacht & Country Club: The question of how to successfully marry contemporary home design with furnishings of many vintages is answered by touring Jim McAlister's home. His collection of furniture and artwork over the last 25 years have settled nicely into the one story layout of his current home. Don't miss the lushly landscaped garden complete with a bubbling fountain. In addition to the homes on this year's tour, two other special events are occurring. Bellinger's Jewelers have donated a 14K gold Delaware Lightship pendant necklace that will be raffled. The Corner Cupboard Inn, located on Park Avenue, will be open from noon - 2:30 p.m. offering special luncheon selections on these two days. A portion of the proceeds from this lunch will be donated to the Art League. Cottage Tour tickets are $15, and are available from the Art League. Call 302-227-8408. Advance ticket purchase is recommended. Tickets will be available at each tour site on the day of the tour. This function is for adults and children over 12 years of age. |
