LETTERS From CAMP Rehoboth |
A Home on Baltimore Avenue |
by Murray Archibald |
For much of the last two years, the pages of Letters have been filled with plans, ideas, dreams, and visions for creating The CAMP Rehoboth Community Center. Many people throughout our community have joined together to support the development of the Center. This winter we are taking the next big step and purchasing the property where CAMP Rehoboth has always been, at 39 Baltimore Avenue in downtown Rehoboth. Although we will not close on the property until April, the Board of Directors of CAMP Rehoboth felt it was important to let everyone know what the plans are and what it means for the organization and for the community. As planning for the Community Center Project began some time ago, it was agreed by the many people working on the project that the center needed to be in downtown Rehoboth Beach. It was also agreed that in order to accomplish that feat, we would need property that provided some kind of income to offset the larger cost that would come with owning prime downtown commercial property. Our first choice was always 39 Baltimore Avenue, the property where CAMP Rehoboth began and has always been. As of this week, and not dependent upon the sale, we are in the process of moving the CAMP offices to the front space at 39 Baltimore, formerly occupied by Twist Home Decor. We'll have larger offices, a small conference room, and a large open area for meetings, displays and other activities. It won't be the community center yet, but it's the next step along the way, and it certainly will be an improvement on the small, cramped space we've called home for so many years. The PLAN, as it stands now, is to continue with our five year Capitol Building Fund, and to eventually build the new Community Center on the front part of the property. The exciting news is that revenue from the existing lease-holders (three retail spaces, the new CAMP office, and an apartment), will be sufficient to pay the mortgage on the property, so the Founder's Circle can focus on raising money to pay for a new building. After the mortgage is paid, the rental income will continue to provide vital funds for the growth and management of the Center. That we have progressed so fast in our efforts to make The Community Center a reality, is a tribute to this great community in which we live. There is a need and there are those willing to step up and see that the need is met. All of us at CAMP Rehoboth are thrilled at the prospect of being able to "stay at home" on Baltimore Avenue. It's where CAMP Rehoboth belongs. It's where visitors know where to find us. It's where we can be our most effective as an organization. It is indeed, our home, and the best place for us to live up to our vision of being "the heart of the community."
