CAMP and Film Society Present Another Take GLBT Film Series |
The Rehoboth Beach Film Society (RBFS) is again partnering with CAMP Rehoboth to co-host the Another Take film series, which features gay and lesbian-themed films. The summer session takes place Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 15, 16 and 17. Thursday and Friday's screenings will be held at the upstairs screening room at the Movies at Midway at 7 p.m. Saturday's screening will be under the stars with an outdoor screening in the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center courtyard, at 9 p.m.
The series begins on Thursday with Strange Fruit. Set in contemporary rural Louisiana, Strange Fruit explores the tribulations of William Boyals, a successful New York lawyer and gay African-American. Boyals comes home to the life from which he escaped to investigate the lynching of his also-gay childhood friend, Kelvin. Amidst the sultry beauty of the bayou, William is forced to wade through a bog of conspiracy involving an insidious network of local law enforcement and a dangerously entrenched subculture of hatred and intolerance. At the same time, he finds himself having to confront the reasons he left in the first place. The harder he looks, the deeper he gets, until the veil is pulled back to reveal a quagmire of racism and homophobia that threatens his life. (2004, runtime: 115 minutes, no rating) Friday continues with Girl Play, the painfully funny love story of the lives of writers/actors Robin Greenspan and Lacie Harmon. The story begins as Robin, who is essentially married to her girlfriend of six years, and Lacie, who has never had a relationship lasting past sunrise, are cast to play lovers in a Los Angeles stage play. Stage director Gabriel (Dom Deluise) directs the actresses through a series of rehearsals designed to ensure intimacy in their performances. But soon, the two women find themselves increasingly attracted to each other until finally they are overcome with desire. They must ask themselves whether this relationship is manufactured for the sake of the performance or if it's true love. In an attempt to come to terms with these irresistible feelings for each other, the two women tell their stories; flashing back to key moments in their lives, including an adult Robin coming out of the closet to her mother (Mink Stole) and Lacie's trials and errors in the dating world. All of these flashbacks are intertwined with moments of desire for one another during the rehearsals for the play. (2004, runtime: 73 minutes, no rating) Saturday closes with Wilby Wonderful, a bittersweet comedy about the difference a day makes. Over the course of twenty-four hours, the residents of the tiny island town of Wilby try to maintain business as usual in the face of very unusual business. Town residents include the local video store owner who will soon be outed against his will, the promiscuous town native who long ago left Wilby and has returned with her adolescent daughter to open a caf, and the police officer and his driven businesswoman wife, both of whom want to keep up appearances while their marriage falls apart. Lurking beneath all of these characters and their attempts to connect with each other is the scandal that will affect them all. (2004, runtime: 99 minutes, no rating) Tickets are $5 and seating is limited. For reservations, call Rehoboth Beach Film Society (302-645-9095). For the Saturday screening at CAMP's courtyard, beverages will be available for purchase. In case of rain, the screening will take place in the Upstairs Screening Room at the Movies at Midway at 7 p.m. Call RBFS on Saturday to be sure of time and location. The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is supported, in part, by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency committed to promoting and supporting the arts in Delaware.
