National Website with a Local Connection
Steve Hayes, President of Interactive Strategies, Inc, (and long time Rehoboth summer resident) recently announced the launch of OUTdaily.com, a new gay interest web site. Vic Basile, the first director of the Human Rights Campaign, will act as consulting editor for the new site, which will be updated daily to offer a one-stop source of news, information and entertainment to the gay community. http://www.OUTdaily.com is different than anything else weve seen on the internet, and it offers much more than could ever be possible in the conventional media," said Basile. "We hope that after reading the morning paper our community will start clicking-on to OUTdaily for a self-affirming daily dose of whats new." Among other things, the site will feature gay-interest national news, audio access to daily radio programming, a monthly calendar of gay events, information on gay and lesbian community service organizations and events, and hotlinks to gay organizations, services and entertainment resources, including gay-themed movie information and broadcast schedules for In the Life on PBS. "Im particularly proud that this site is appropriate for gays and lesbians of all ages. Sexual content is not what we are about. This site was designed to provide easy access to the news and information our community wantsfree of charge," Basile continued. "We also think its important that this site enables us to reach out to thousands of gays and lesbians who may not have regular accessfor whatever reasonto the self-affirming gay media that many of us take for granted." An important feature of OUTdaily.com is the inclusion of a daily video message from nationally known political figures, celebrities and gay and lesbian leaders. This feature launches with a message from President Clinton, renewing his commitment to gay rights before the Human Rights Campaign. Other October videos feature Phil Donahue, actress Amanda Bearse (Married...With Children), and author Michelangelo Signorile. Future months will showcase comedians, Hollywood celebrities, and sports figures. OUTdaily is also assembling a consortium of gay and lesbian web sites to allow community organizations to showcase themselves on OUTdailyand also share in future advertising revenues. SCAC Offers Workshop On Grief Resolution On Saturday, November 7, 1998 the Sussex County AIDS Committee (SCAC) will sponsor a three-hour workshop entitled "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables: Addressing AIDS-Related Multiple Losses". This presentation with a workshop is appropriate for both HIV-positive and HIV-negative persons, health care providers, and even folks who know little about AIDS. The workshop will provide constructive ways to deal with grief and loss, especially as to how it relates to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. SCAC is offering the workshop free-of-charge to the community. The workshop will be led by Kevin Mallinson, MSN, RN, ACRN. Mallinson received his baccalaureate degree in Nursing from the University of Miami and his Master of Science in Nursing with a specialty in AIDS from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. His thesis focused on the experience of AIDS-related multiple losses. Currently he is a full-time doctoral student in the Nursing Ph.D. program at the Johns Hopkins University. As Mallinson explains, "Throughout the HIV epidemic in the United States, gay men have suffered untold losses of acquaintances, friends and lovers. Research to date suggests that, if not addressed, the grief responses may become complicated; the overlapping bereavements unresolved. The affected individuals and communities are exhibiting escalating substance use, irrational risk-taking and a deepening sense of despair. Few services adequately address these unique problems and fewer still are developed for uninfected survivors." This presentation and interactive workshop will explore the real-life meaning of an epidemic and guide the participants to identify practical and effective ways that they may maintain their health and well being. The impact upon prevention strategies will also be explored. The presentation will begin at 9:00 a.m., ending with a light lunch served at noon. Although the workshop is free, participants must pre-register by calling the SCAC office at 302-644-1090. The Sussex County AIDS Committee is a private, non-profit organization that provides support services to residents of Sussex County with HIV infection or AIDS. In addition, SCAC provides educational programs and offers free, anonymous HIV testing at its office in Rehoboth Beach.
