LETTERS From CAMP Rehoboth |
The Way I See It |

Sometimes those of us who live and work in Rehoboth start to take our town for granted. We get caught up in deadlines and schedules and all the other reasons we have for staying busy, and we forget what a great place this really is. Sometimes we forget that there are good reasons why so many thousands of people come here every yearreasons like, the beautiful beaches, the fabulous restaurants, and the good company of family and friends. Last week, for a couple of days around the Fourth of July, we had a chance to slow down and catch our breath after Love 2001, and enjoy this place we call home. On one of those nights, after a dinner in one of our favorite restaurants, Murray and I, and our friend and houseguest Sondra Arkin, strolled down to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Boardwalk. On certain occasions, perhaps when the moon is just right, it has become our custom to finish off a nice evening with a ride on the Funland Sea Dragonyou know, the one that looks like a big ship on a swing. Murray says it's because it makes us laugh so much, but for whatever the reason, we always feel better after our Dragon ride. Unfortunately, we don't always know when to call it quits, and so upon completion of last week's ride we gaily followed some young Dragon riding companions to something called the Gravitron which (Oh, My God!) made us all feel twice our age, and on the verge of a heart attack as well. All around us kids were shrieking in delight, but the three of us lay like ancient squashed bugs, praying for the world to stop spinningwhich it eventually did and then we staggered home feeling like we were returning from a great adventure. And all within a couple of blocks of home! Life is good!
As the summer rolls on into the month of July, plans for Sundance 2001 continue to take shape. Last week Sponsor and Supporter forms were mailed out, soon to be followed by this year's Host letters. To get a head start on signing up for the event, check out our new Sundance web site at www.sundancebenefit.com. Designers Mary Beth Ramsey and Brandon Maddox have lifted the butterfly out of Murray's 2001 Sundance painting and flown it into the design. The painting, titled transFORMation, is part of a his sold-out 2001 Blue Moon showon display through the end of the monthand will be auctioned at this year's Sundance. The show also has a lot to do with this year's Sundance theme, The Divine Order of the Wings of the Cosmic Rainbow. "Think butterfly wings," Murray says," and maybe Peter Max." Sundance, for those new to the area, is the huge two night Labor Day fund raiser at the Rehoboth Convention Center that provides major funding for Sussex County AIDS Committee and CAMP Rehoboth. Politics in our beach town are always interesting, and this summer's election is certainly no exception. In our next issue of Letters, we hope to have responses to a series of questions from each of this year's candidatesincumbents Patti Shreeve and Rich Sargent, and challenger Mark Aguirre. It's too late to register for this summer's election, but if you have registered, make plans to vote on Saturday, August 11. The five year Capital Building Fund Campaign for the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center Project is only six weeks old, but pledges and contributions are already pushing the Project toward its first year's goal. If you would like to make a pledge or receive a brochure about the project, call the CAMP office, 302-227-5620. Part of the mission of the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center Project is to be an "inclusive space with and without walls." As part of that mission, CAMP Rehoboth now has a number of different support groups meeting at various locations in the Rehoboth area. For information about the CRCCP support groups see pages 82 and 83 or call the CAMP office. Have a great July. |
