PFLAG identified a number of young people needing a space to meet peers and have fun, and the Kent Sussex AIDS Program (KSAP) of Georgetown, De. was looking for a safe, supportive place to refer LGBTQ young people. The need gave way to an opportunity with KSAP offering meeting space to PFLAG in return for their starting a Friday Night Social Club.
Recently, a core group of young people met at KSAP in Georgetown to discuss putting together a social club and to generate a list of activities in which they might want to participate. Suggestions included: bus trips to areas such as D.C., Philadelphia and Annapolis; costume parties; video nights; potluck theme parties; dances; theatre trips; bowling; and a host other great ideas.
In addition to providing the space for the group to meet, KSAP has assigned a staff person to assist with organizational tasks. And, although there are some older people helping with the initial set-up, the group will eventually be run exclusively by young people, for young people, between the ages of 16-22.
At present, the group's main task is to get the word out to potential members. If you fit the age group and would like to be able to do fabulous stuff with terrific people, call the PFLAG liaison, Meredith Hunter, (302) 856-3389.
Let's do Spring!
