Arguably the most widely read "gay novel" of all times, The Front Runner was first published in 1974. It was the first novel about homosexuals to become successful in mainstream America. It has sold an estimated ten million copies worldwide and has been translated into eight languages. In fact, The Front Runner has never been out of printa phenomenon for any book, much less a "gay novel."
In The Front Runner, Harlan Brown is a tough, conservative coach hiding from himself in a small New York state college. Billy Sive is a brilliant young runner who is homosexual and doesnt mind who knows it. As they fall in love, they enter a race against hate and prejudice that eventually takes them to the 1976 Olympics and a shattering conclusion. If you are one of the few who have not read it, copies of both The Front Runner and Harlans Race are available for purchase ($12.95) at Lambda Rising for the signing. And for those of you with copies that are torn and tattered from being lent to friends, it will be a good time to get a new, personally autographed copy. You will also be able to assist the Rehoboth PFLAG chapter to defray the expense of Ms. Warrens travel by purchasing tickets for a 50/50 Raffle. Tickets are available from PFLAG members and will be on sale at the book signing.
PFLAG has more than 400 affiliate groups with more than 65,000 members in the United States, along with networks located in 11 other countries providing support for families and friends in an effort to end homophobia. In addition, PFLAG offers publications, resources, task forces and programs on key issues and hosts an annual international convention. PFLAG Sussex County at Rehoboth was formed in 1996.
