Naturally, if you haven't discovered the Dream Cafe at 26 Baltimore Avenue for breakfast, with their yummy croissants, Brooklyn Bagels, wonderful waffles (made to order!), homemade biscotti and terrific coffee and tea selections, by all means, check it out.
But like many folks, I had no idea they served such special lunch selections as well.
Every day, partners Anne Marie Sopko and Sue Early prepare creative soups, salads and unique sandwiches perfect for light summer afternoons. The fare will satisfy a variety of tastes, but vegetarians should be especially happy with the numerous choices.
Bonnie and I sampled delicious Mushroom and Potato soup (thick and flavorful, without the fat of a cream soup), along with a taste of the vegetarian chile (spicy, but not overwhelmingly so, and thick with beans, zucchini and other healthy favorites, served in a fresh sourdough boule) and Fiesta soup-a light tomato base, with rice, corn, cilantro and lime. All three would make terrific meals by themselves or be perfect with the soup & salad or soup & sandwich combo.
New this year are Pita Flatbread Wrappers try the Turkey Wrapper stuffed with roast turkey, artichokes, greens and tomato; the Mediterranean has feta cheese, sun dried tomato pesto, black olives and greens. The Italian provalone, olive tapenade, greens, sprouts and tomato is Bonnie's favorite, but the Rehoboth Wrapper, filled with basil pesto, humus, greens and sprouts won my nod for best in show.
Another specialty is the curried chicken salad, with raisins and black olives-terrific on a roll.
We'll all be heading out to the beach shortly, and it's good to know that you can call ahead to Dream Cafe with your sandwich order and it will be ready far you as you pass by on your way to your beach blanket.
With their reputation for sophisticated flavored coffees and Italian sodas, they also discovered they had the ingredients for an authentic New York Chocolate Egg Cream (Never been to Brooklyn? An egg cream is made Of club soda, a splash of half & half and chocolate syrup-no eggs in sight!) Anne Marie has been perfecting it!
For healthier shakes, try the Hawaiian-strawberry and pineapple...sort of a virgin strawberry daiquiri. The Blue Hawaii-blueberries, banana and pineapple is something to write home about.
And don't forget to check the board for the daily specials...they really are as special as advertised. The menu even offers economical kids sandwiches like peanut butter and jelly or dolphin-safe tuna (although you probably don't need to show ID to prove you're a kid for the PB&J).
Dream Cafe is definitely everything you'd want in on espresso bar... but keep their lunchtime selections in mind, too. And, depending on your mood, you can enjoy a healthy and creative sandwich...a rich, gooey dessert. Or, of course, an egg cream for a taste of The Big Apple...
