Alas, the final days of summer are among us. Although there are several major events still headed our way, its hard to believe that weve already been through over 30 house and dance parties combined. It seems like only yesterday when we were sipping champagne at Tony Burns Preakness Party or "simply having tea" with 10 Terrace. Believe it or not, LOVE97 dazzled us close to two months ago! Boy, does time fly. The good news, however, is that in Rehoboth we play to the very last minute. So dont call it quits just yet! If there was ever a time to be fabulous this summerwhether it be with a mask, wig, or pair of pumpsthat time began here in Rehoboth within the past two weeks.
On August 9th, 1 Robinsons Franklin Maphis, Claude Burcky, David Summers, Kevin Burr, Jerry Daniello, Hunter Hemphill, Marc Charon, Jeff Staadt, John Francis, Ryan Smith, Ken Smith, Bill Farmer, Joe Kekeris, Chaz Marriott and Rich Sargent requested that all men wear masks to their annual gathering; not because they wanted to hide their guests pretty faces, but because sometimes doing it anonymously is better. In one corner of the well-lit yard was a slew of Jason-esque ax murderers, phantoms singing opera and a collection of equally frightening young men with Ponds cold cream on their faces. Putting the moves on all the princesses and young queens in the crowd was a quartet of "Horn E. Devils" in the shape of 48 Olives Paul Robinson, Craig Byers, Paul Dradransky and Rick Bonnet. And poolboy Petie Melchiorre was seen hiding behind a cabbage patch baby face to prevent the onslaught of spankings that have persisted following his recent 34th birthday celebration.
Last weekend, John Klenerts 3 Country Club castle was under attack at the 3rd annual Squirt Gun Party dubbed Men and Women In Black. Housemates Karen Anderson, Jack Ay, Joel Flatow, Louis Vega, Jeff McCracken, Peter Luger, Jeff Brooke, Chris Sheppard, Scott Sinclair, Tom Rodriquez, David Torian, Ron Lorentzen, Randy Brewster, Ed Hesse, Ron Robertson and Steve Ribachonek "protected Rehoboth from the scum of the universe" by scorching their alien attendees with hot water. Joining in on the extraterrestrial combat was a pair of Ester Williams clones who held a striking resemblance to Rehoboths own Chris Riss and Paul Ludeman. But the real hero of the evening turned out to be 10 Georges Vasile Montan for toting the biggest gun without ever using his hands.
Close encounters of every kind continued later in the evening when 12 Robinson (Layne Owens, Henry Brenke, Alan Talley and friends) hosted the Mardi Gras Party from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. This crowd of boisterous bead fanciers served up traditional New Orleans hospitality in a "flash." The question is: "How do we get back into that basement of theirs?"
Then, it was off to the auto-garage where a couple hundred womenall of whom knew nothing about carswere simply looking for a good mechanic to give them a quick oil change. 208 Rodneys long-awaited Hot Rod Drag Race hosted by Tom Kantor, Jon Kaplan, Joel Pearson, Rut Paal, Robert Mittleman, Todd Burke, John Harper, Eric Lancaster and James Matthew passed inspection with flying rainbow colors. While there were some people who didnt bother accessorizing, most were able to find a hood ornament that best suited their personality. Standing in for housemate Cliff Lassahn was Miss Shirley Worthette who, in the eyes of many, was quite "gripping." Sisters Sassy and Georgette LaRue (distant cousins of Brian Barber) revved an engine or two while former columnist and Chris Riss alter ego, Suda Nym surprisingly appeared to remind Rehoboth that shes still got that Midas Touch. And finallyonce againin maximum sexual overdrive was 10 Georges Vasile Montan whos stick shift seemed to be stuck in hi-gear all night.
This weekend, rush on over to the Phi Alpha Gamma Sorority Party at 22 Brooklyn from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. on Saturday. Otherwise known as the "PH.A.G." Party, expect the best "red drinks" in Rehoboth while engaging yourself in traditional sorority-style electives, such as "Cuticle Crafts," "How to Wear Your Boyfriends Baseball Cap," and "The Art of Using the Word LIKE". Please join these ladies for a hazing good time. Oh, and uh, Doug Schantzs Aunt Harriet is going to be there.
Once you finish acting phony at the sorority party, get your colored markers ready because youre invited to join Tom Minnuto at Savannahs for the end of summer T-Shirt Signing Party from 9 p.m. - midnight. Whether you come to sign a farewell to a friend, or if you just want to feel what some guys chest feels like beneath his shirt, this is the farewell party you shouldnt miss. A portion of the bar proceeds will benefit CAMP Rehoboth, so hop out to the outlets and buy you and your housemates some bright, white Ts. You wont regret it.
Labor Day weekend is the weekend everyones been waiting for all summer. If you havent bought your tickets for SUNDANCE 97, dont waste another minute. Call CAMP Rehoboth at 227-5620 to buy tickets or be a host, or look for Tom Minnuto selling tickets on Poodle Beach. This years SUNDANCE is special because it marks the 10th anniversary of the charity event as well as the 19th anniversary for couple Murray Archibald and Steve Elkins. The Silent and Live Auction is being held on Saturday, August 30 at the Rehoboth Convention Center beginning at 7 p.m. Then on Sunday, August 31, Murray and George Domurot will transform the Convention Center into a sensational dance hall for the biggest event of the summer from 8 p.m. - 2 a.m. The Auction includes foodcoordinated by the Blue Moonmusic by Mark Thomas, great items with The Shore Inns Ben Killebrew holding the gavel, and surprise entertainment. The Dance will feature the music of NYCs Mark Thomas and a spectacular lightshow by George Domurot. And, both of these events includes an open bar. Hope to see you there!
Before you slip on your SUNDANCE dancing shoes on Sunday, August 31st, pick up all your back-to-school supplies at 212 Philadelphias Back To School Jam from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. Yes, the time has come to get on the bus and go home for another grueling off-season. So grab your Jenny McCarthy lunch box and stop in to pay tribute to all the great people and parties that have worn your butt out this summer.
Now, if youre one of the lucky people whose beach house lease extends past Labor Day, then theres a special treat in store for you. Jake Smithhart and John Ammitzboll will be hosting La Fiesta Ultima at their 334 Hickman home from 9 p.m. - midnight on Sept 6th, and those lucky ones left in Rehoboth are invited. But dont worry if youre back at home without a party to go to. Theres plenty to look forward to this fall and winter.
On October 5th, Peter Rosensteins organization ARTS in ACTION will be presenting Roberta Flack in concert at the Lincoln Theater in DC. The performance is in honor of Henry Yaffes (Mr. Henrys restaurants) 80th birthday and will benefit Food and Friends and Whitman Walker Clinic. For sponsorship and ticket info, call Peter at 202 785-4268.
And tell all your friends to get hooked up in February at Tom Minnuto and Chris Riss Beach House Rush Party 98 in DC. Its never too soon to think about next summer!
