I am sitting here on the beach, listening to the waves crash on the sand behind me, trying to finish the tan Ive been working on for the past three weeks. I cant help but think about how my vacation has been affected by so many different people in the Rehoboth community. What started as a six day vacation has turned into three weeks of a temp job, new friends and memories that Ill keep for a long time.
I came to the beach to visit a high school friend, and I soon realized that because of my friends job schedule I would have a lot of time alone. From 4:00 to midnight, I walked around by myself, doing all the usual tourist things, but theres only so much shopping a person can doeven a gay male, believe it or not. Luckily, on one of those long nights I discovered Loris Cafe (next to Lambda Rising) where I met Mary Beth and Raneytwo of Loris employees. Through them, I met a variety of friends and no longer had to spend my evenings alone. I had more fun than I had ever expected, and thanks to a job offer from a local B&B, I was able to stay two extra weeks. And in those two weeks, I grew even closer to my new found friends.
I also discovered Poodle Beach and the Renegade. I hadnt realized the supreme numbers of gay men (and women) around Rehoboth. I was quite pleasantly surprised.
I guess what I am getting at is to say thank you. Thank you CAMP Rehoboth and the shops around you for having people like Raney and Mary Beth who took in a stranger and turned him into an honorary local. I know Im going to miss all my new friends, especially Raney who taught me how to juggle. Without them, I would have left town never understanding how great Rehoboth Beach is for the gay community.
So farewell for now, Ill miss you all. But, I guarantee you that I will be back, again and again.
