The CAMP Rehoboth Volunteers on Vacation project was a great success!
The Volunteer Kick-Off Project was held Saturday, May 2, at the West Side New Beginnings Community Center. The CAMP volunteer team worked painting several rooms (library, hallway, office and computer room) of the center as well as organizing and categorizing library books. Even children that use the community center helped with the work. It was good to see some of the volunteers coaching the younger children on the finer techniques of painting. Not surprising that when asked whether she would like to help paint or organize the library booksthe younger child said "PAINT"! And when we ran out of supplies, Butch (from the center) went to Home Depot for more. The community center was busy on Saturday morningin addition to the CAMP team there were folks from the Epworth United Methodist Church plant-ing flowers and putting down mulch. They landscaped the community center and then a few homes in West Rehoboth. And you knew you were at a community center...it was a place of bustling activity, everybody that lived in the neighborhood was out helping with the projects, young and old(er)! Donuts, coffee, water and pizza were the meals of choice that day. Thanks to the volunteers: Elaine Horan, Deborah Sciallo, Judy Rice, Crash Brown, Denise Bradford, Alaina Eichinger, Leslie Sinclair, Debbie Woods, Ellen Orrell, Sue Goudy (Team Leader), Christine Morrow, Sue Early, and Kathy Wiz. It was a wonderful experience for meI got to know some wonderful people and learn more about this small community so close to my own home in Rehoboth. I want to give a special thanks to Diaz Bonville and Brenda Milbourne of West Side New Beginningswithout them ensuring the continuation of the community center we would not have a place to volunteer. Claire Ippoliti Volunteer Project Coordinator Our daughter and occasional Rehoboth Beach resident, Carly Schleider, will be participating in a 545 mile charity bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, May 31 through June 6, to raise money for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the L.A. I have read with interest the criticisms of Governor Markell's plans to balance the budget. But I have heard little in the way of constructive suggestions to meet this challenge. What would we do if our household incomes were suddenly hit with a 25 percent cut? That is exactly the situation that greeted Governor Markell and Lt. Governor Denn when they assumed office in January. That translates into a $750 million shortfall in this year's budget. Their budget decisions have been guided by key principles of fiscal responsibility, compassion by keeping our core commitments, and shared sacrifice. I have heard teachers and other State employees being critical of the Governor for asking them to share in the sacrifice. I wonder what they would cutthe police, or cut prison budgets and release offenders? Or maybe the veterans' hospital beyond that already envisioned. I have heard teachers take the position that it would be better if some teachers were fired rather than all teachers accept a temporary eight percent pay cut. That seems to me to be both selfish and not very considerate of the needs of students. I know that this has been a heart wrenching exercise for our Governor. But throughout the process he has worked to find savings within State government and to protect programs that affect the most needy among us. The Governor has led by example cutting 10 percent of his salary, by instituting cuts in salaries of Cabinet Officers, and by looking out for the needs of children and the neediest among us. Now is the time to come together and support him and others who are working very hard to get us through this crisis. Lee I.
