LETTERS From CAMP Rehoboth |
Farewell Being Scene...Welcome NEWS & NOTES |
by Tom Minnuto |
Just over a year ago, my e-mail address book contained no more than 50 names. Most of the addresses were people I knew from Rehoboth. And every now and then, I would send them news about something going on at the beach, such as a party or fundraiser or how to get registered in the annual Beach Book phone directory.
The people who received my e-mails would often forward them to their friends and so on. This snowball effect soon led to complete strangers e-mailing me, asking to be added to my address book, so they too could keep abreast on happenings in Rehoboth. Additionally, I started receiving requests from people who wanted to have their own news mentioned in my weekly briefs. Before I knew it, the number of names in my address book had literally quadrupled, and what was once a simple e-mail had become a full-fledged online newsletter. I called it Rehoboth Beach NEWS & NOTES. Today, Rehoboth Beach NEWS & NOTES has a distribution of over 1,000 people. I suppose it's popular for several reasons: It's informative, "to-the-point," and instantaneous (right in your e-mail box every week). This is how we prefer things in the 21st century. Nonetheless, don't expect the print media to disappear anytime soon. We look forward to magazines like Letters from CAMP Rehoboth, which contain a collection of articles from various authors as well as advertisements, order forms, pictures, contests and crossword puzzles. In fact, when Letters editor, Steve Elkins, called to say that there should be a print version of NEWS & NOTES, I didn't blink an eye. It's a great idea and the reason why you're reading this right now. Consequently, NEWS & NOTES will replace Rehoboth's original gossip column, Being Scene, which had a healthy 10-year run, thanks in part to previous authors, David MacKay and Dave Parham. I'll miss writing Being Scene, but times change and I feel good about saying goodbye to the column while it was still a shining star and not a fallen one. So it's on to the future with NEWS & NOTES. Be sure to read both the electronic version and the printed version here in Letters since they each contain some information that the other doesn't. To subscribe to the online version of NEWS & NOTES, send an e-mail entitled "Add Me" to NewsNotes2001@aol.com. Don't forget to include your first and last name for tracking purposes.
